“Cheap & Cheerful”

Top marks for location to the train station without being in the train station. Close to the castle, the old city & the new city. Quiet. It is a hostel so it is less expensive than a hotel. I was travelling with a friend and we got a private room, two beds. Small beds, small tv, small washroom. We spent about 7hours in the room and that was for sleeping, the rest of our time was out exploring this beautiful city. The private room was 52 pounds on Nov 15 included a breakfast. The little bar there was a good place to start and finish the evening. Overall, price & location made this place a good visit. Staff were for the most helpful. Thanks

“Great location but the rest...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2011

THE REALLY GOOD POINT IS : The place is ideal to visit the city : 3 min walking from the airport bus stop and located just between Old Town and New Town.

THE MEDIUM POINTS ARE (depending on what you're looking for) : You have to know if you go there that it is a youth hostel which mantra is "party hard sleep easy" indeed the hostel is just above a bar (The Belushi's) and the reception desk is behind the beer machines. For some this could be a great invite. Anyway at the 3rd floor we sleep easy without any noise and the beds were goods with nice dinosaurus sheets.

THE WRONG POINTS ARE : As couple we were disapointed as the "twin bedroom" become a bunk beds bedroom...! they should precise it during the booking.

We met two kind of staff : #1 after 5 pm is nice, helpfull as bar tender they seem to be used to deal with various people / #2 on the morning is not helpful and you have to foreseen special time to wait to have the right to check out !

Note that the luggage room is with pay lockers.

The household is medium : bathroom was old but clean but under the bed the vacuum cleaner never goes ! (we found someone else deodorant for example)

The breakfast is really poor quality with instant coffee, tea bags without name, hot water, bread and jam samples. I recommend you not to pay for it and to go down town have a proper breakfast.

“great location, but....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

I would not stay here again when i return to edinburgh someday, nor would i recommend it. i stayed here during the international festival / fringe / military tattoo so basically there were hardly any choices left. the location was crazy good, literally a 30 second walk from the train station and about a 5 minute walk to the bus station. the four person dorm i stayed in was actually quite clean, and the shower was great. one night i had to move into the 14 person dorm and it was awful. dirtiest, smelliest bathroom i have ever experienced. the breakfast isn't great and like other st. christopher's it's attached to a bar which does not always equal good service. the internet hardly ever worked. i'm sure there are lots of other great hostels in edinburgh!

Room Tip: go for the 4 person if you have to stay here! otherwise look somewhere else.

“Alright.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

This place is OK! & very central.
i was expecting the worst when i signed up to go here with a few friends this summer. but when i got here i was pleasantly surprised!! it is actually alright; it's clean enough & the staff are ok. however, the 'breakfast' is not a breakfast, it's really quite awful. &when we were sleeping in our beds at 3/4 in the morning we did get a few random people trying to get into our room!! bathroom's TINY, and with 8 people in the one room. you can only imagine! - we didn't find any bed bugs though, and the place was quite clean.

“Not worth the money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2011

I stayed at the St Christopher's for one night and had to pay for two nights for a single/private room. Admittedly, I was very late in booking (only 5 days prior to check in) and most of the other hotels were fully books due to fresher's week. However, the amount I payed (approx 70 Pounds) is certainly overpriced. The rooms are very basic, certainly clean, but tasteless. This wasn't a satisfying experience given the relatively high costs.
