Myself, my partner, and another couple recently (Wednesday 5th May 2010) stayed at the Original Raj Hotel in Edinburgh.
I am not in the habit of making complaints but must advise I was thoroughly disappointed with many things during our stay, a list of which you will find below;
• Unhappy with the service (or, more accurately, the lack of service) we received during our stay. The night porter was extremely rude and unhelpful. He seemed to take a particular disliking to my partner, and can only assume that this was to do with his (and my) sexuality.
• The appalling quality of the “continental breakfast” offered and fashion in which we were expected to dine (ie in lounge chairs). We were also watched closely while we ate.
• Unhappy with the quality of the rooms (the window frames in BOTH rooms had fallen down when attempting to open, the soft furnishings were in a state of disarray and disrepair and moth-eaten in places, and the musky/stale smell).
• The noise we had to endure was shocking; nearly every hour during the night we were subjected to the banging of the door leading to the staircase and somebody opening and closing doors constantly. We must have been staying next to supply cupboard of some kind. This combined with some awfully noisy plumbing and having a road-facing room, none of us got a wink of sleep!
• When we first arrived at the hotel, we were advised that we could leave our luggage and that it would be kept safe, as the room was not yet ready. When we later returned it was STILL in the reception area, unattended, and hadn’t moved since we left. It was agreed that we could do the same for check out, as we had late trains booked. The luggage yet again had been left in the reception area all day. It wasn’t until we arrived home wanting to upload the pictures from our visit that we realised that our camera was gone.
• I had also been itching throughout the night and broken out in a rash after staying in the bed.
I regret to continue that this is unfortunately, not the end.
I had written an email advising of the many problems and after 1 week had received no response. I called to ask why my email had been ignored only to be told that it must have gone to their “London” branch. Having trawled the internet, I found no evidence of the mysterious “London” branch. I was given another email and waited a further week. Still I received no response.
Common courtesy would assume that even an email acknowledging the receipt of the email would have been sent. Alas not.
After calling the hotel again to ask why I had heard nothing regarding the complaint, Bartek advised that the email had been forwarded to management and there is nothing else he could do. Bartek was rude, dismissive and his lack of customer service in a front of house role astounded me.
I finally received an email back shortly after this confrontation advising that a “thorough” search of the rooms had taken place; as I had previously explained, the camera went missing whilst in the reception area. When I called back, I asked about the CCTV in the reception area and was laughed at and I was informed that it may or may not have been working. At this point I was BEYOND furious!
Over the many weeks and chronicling the many calls to and from, I have never managed to speak to the elusive manager, who just so happens to be the only person who can deal with these matters. Only when she feels like it it may seem. It seems she is part-time, working from home and on holiday simultaneously! I have even attempted to contact her through Facebook with no luck!
I am still battling with The Raj for a refund on my stay and any news on my missing camera.
It may look nice but my advice; stay WELL away if you value your health, your life and your sanity!
I wouldn't even recommend this hotel to an enemy, let alone a friend!!!
