“BEG-BUG ALERT YUK!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2010

Just a horrible experience.Just like someone has already written, i too awoke during the night to find the bed riddled with bed bugs. i am still itching with bites all over my body.I went to bed around 12 but was a bit itchy from the start.i went to the toilet at about 230am then noticed the bugs crawling everywhere from the base of the bed to the architrave around the window.i tried to wake the owner, allen but with no luck.i then proceeded to sit up til finally i woke him at about 730am.i demanded money back as u can imagine.other than that the place was filthy and i wouldnt recommend staying there.

“shocking”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2010

lonely planet suggested places on this road but this was the only one with rooms available at a reasonable rate. allan seems nice, but: the doors are noisy and rooms are shabby. our bed was sunken and my skin was crawling from when i lay down - after getting up several times to check the sheets, we finally discovered all three stages of bedbugs and blood on the sheets - it was disgusting. we went in to take showers immediately and found a couple in there too. we waited until nearly 7am for allan to show up and got a refund, but losing the sleep was not worth it. apparently they "had trouble before" but "sorted it out". if you stay here, check your room very carefully. or stay next door instead.

“this place is filthy - avoid”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 April 2010

i stayed here with my partner, just the one night goodness! the location is ok, the web site says 15 min walk to the city centre its more like a 20 minute brisk walk... the greeting was cheery enough but the acoomodation filthy dirty, the bathroom was the worst! we did not even take showers as the bathroom was so dirty, the shower cubiclehad two bits of used soap on the floor suggesting it had not been cleaned after the previous occupants, the mugs on the tea tray had not been cleaned properly either. sheets and towels spotless though so theres a bonus... now we didnt intend to stayin and watch television but did fancy a little late night viewing when we returned, only two channels available and one with no sound! ll in all a very dissapointing stay. now we understand 75 quiid doesnt buy you much but when you consider a you can get a travel lodge for much the same price. avoid this palce at all cost - you will regret it

“ok location...but mind the filth!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 February 2010

I stayed at Acorn Lodge for 1 night with some friends. When we arrived, we were greeted by Allan who was very cheerful and polite. He took us down to the basement to the family room (3 single beds) where we were instantly hit by a foosty, damp smell.
Just off the bedroom is a small kitchen which was absolutely disgusting! There were 2 mugs and a small teacup..all filthy. The sink was dirty, as was inside the kettle!

The bathroom is outside the room, although this was ours, but anyone could have gone in. very inconvenient, as I had to visit the loo during the night and got locked outside our room, as the catch on the room door lock doesnt work! The bath tub was absolutely filthy with ground in dirt. The floor also needed a good scrubbing. The bed sheets were clean, thankfully, as was the towels.

The room has a worn out sofa with a dirty blue sheet thrown over...I didnt have the stomach to look under the cover.

We paid extra for a full breakfast. The breakfast was nice and had the norm breakfast foods.

The ONLY nice thing about this place is the man who runs it..Allan.

“Too filthy to take a shower!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2009

My family (partner and partner's sister) and I decided to visit Edinburgh on a whim during the festival season. We booked another place but there was a mistake in their booking system so they booked The Acorn for us which had the only room left in all of Edinburgh at the time.
We got to the room and instantly knew why... the downstairs room was grim and a bit creepy, the bathroom had 6-7 used soap with hair (!!!) and used shampoo packaging.
The kitchen counter had dust everywhere, even the kettle was dirty...
As for the bed, there were some hair between the sheets. It wasn't just one hair, so we were not sure if they have been changed?
The towels were dirty as well with what looked like some makeup.
The bathroom was so filthy that none of us wanted to take a shower, we just could not step into that bath tub which looked like it hasn't been cleaned for years.
The guy at the reception was very friendly and told us he runs the place by himself. Fair enough.... but it doesn't justify the lack of cleanliness and the price!
The only good thing about the place was that there was no bed bugs and we could get on-street parking for free, but reading other reviews it seems like we were just lucky.
