“Brilliant food, friendly staff!”

My lovely boyfriend decided to book a surprise Valentine’s weekend away to Edinburgh (I don’t normally gush…!), and we stayed at the Royal Terrace Hotel. The location of the hotel was fantastic, being central enough to walk in to the city but on a beautiful street away from all the noise and traffic.
On arrival at the hotel the atmosphere was warm and inviting, just what we needed after walking around in the cold all day, and the staff were very friendly and efficient, dealing with us straight away and showing us to our room. The room we stayed in was on the lower ground floor, and was spotlessly clean with every amenity we needed for a comfortable stay, including a very modern bathroom.
Once we had dropped off our bags we went to look around the hotel. My boyfriend had managed to get a very good deal when he booked the hotel, and he hadn’t realised himself that part of the package was a 5 course Valentine’s meal! Our dinner reservations were pre-booked for 7.15pm but we wanted to move these to 6.45pm so we could allow enough time to go on a ghost walk at 9pm (which I would definitely recommend if you are interested in the history of the city and spooky stuff in general). Despite the hotel being extremely busy with it being the weekend before Valentine’s day, the maitre'd sorted this out for us with no hesitation. I must say that the food at the Royal Terrace was exceptional, the Valentine’s meal was delicious, the mussels were the best we’ve ever tried and I couldn’t get enough of the champagne sorbet! On top of this the restaurant was decorated beautifully for the occasion and the staff were all very professional, attentive and most importantly approachable.
The next morning we went down for Scottish breakfast (also included in the package) and the lovely maitre’d showed us to a table. The breakfast was buffet style with fresh fruit, yoghurt, pastries, cereals, juice and then there was the cooked breakfast. The standard was again brilliant, poached eggs cooked to perfection, and the staff served fresh tea, coffee and toast efficiently despite every table in the restaurant being occupied! We never tried out the spa as it was my first time in Edinburgh so we wanted to get out and see the sights but I spoke to a few ladies who recommended the sauna. I can't wait to stay here again on our next trip to Edinburgh!

“Fantastic hotel with a personal touch -Better than Rihanna!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I had been due to visit with my partner, for a romantic dinner bed and breakfast package to celebrate Valentine's Day - however, due to a lover's tiff, I took my mum instead!!!
The hotel was fully-booked, but the welcome was immense. Reception were great, efficient and we were quickly at our room.
The room was large enough, modern and had every amenity - very clean. Okay, I had to share with my mum, as there were no twins left, but hey, it was all right!! We didn't want to stay in the room, we had a look at the gym and pool (all very nice) and headed for the bar.
We were greeted by a very friendly lady who is originally from Barbados. She had great chat and was very helpful indeed. You were happy to be in the place.
We headed out for a while and came back to change for dinner. Dinner was included in our package and was the Valentine's menu. The tables were dressed with heart-shaped balloons and lovely little details. Andy, the maitre'd was fantastic. Service was immense and the food was to die for. Mum adored the moules marinieres and I was blown away by the shin of beef - and the desserts, yum.
Our Barbadian friend came over to have a quick chat and we soon found out that she is the General Manager, Chris. That personal touch made this a hotel which has something more than other four or even five star accommodation in Edinburgh - there's a soul about the place.
We got up for breakfast and again, the food and service was excellent - I'll need to go on a diet after the indulgence.
Oh, and did I mention that we paid £120 for dinner, bed and breakfast? Outstanding value for a bit of well-deserved pampering. I will most certainly return, and I think mum will be hoping that I have another lovers' tiff just before the trip!!
Congratulations to all the team, keep up the good work!!

Room Tip: If you can, get a room upstairs, basement rooms are fine, but there's a great view upstairs!!

“ideal winter break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Located at the east end of the city centre, this hotel is convenient for bus and rail stations and a pleasant walk to many tourist attractions. Our room, a bit on the small side considering how quiet the hotel was during our stay, was clean and comfortable and had a lovely view north over the River Forth to the Fife coast. On our first night (Thursday) the cocktail bar was busy but the restaurant was quiet. The restaurant staff were friendly and the meal was excellent. We ate out on Friday. Overall, the hotel just about deserves its 4 star status and, at a special pre-purchase rate, was good value for a short winter break in Edinburgh.

“Average hotel, have stayed in better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Have just recently came back from a weekends stay at the hotel on Jan 27-29th
On entering the hotel, it was pleasing to see the location it was in, views were nice, plenty of lovely bars and restaurants a short walk down the hill, reception area lovely, a very welcoming start.
As it was my friends 21st (only a couples weekend though) I had rang prior to our visit to see what they offered to special occassions, I was told that a card and sweet plate would be in the room and they kindly offer a free upgrade. There wasn't anything in the room unfortunately, however it was a freebie so shouldn't stew on it. Rooms were nice, we stayed in 511 & 512 felt like we had our own little wing as they were by the selves at the end of the building.
Nice and clean, very comfy beds and a view to die for. Couldn't open windows unfortunately the mechanism was broken. Room had everything you would expect, hair dryer, TV, complimentary soaps, iron etc...including a fridge, which didn't have anything in. If it had been filled with drinks, nuts, chocs they would have made a fortune off us that weekend.

They state to have a pool, gym and spa, they don't really live up to much, however we did go for a dip and it gave us something to do. We didn't eat in the restaurant as it was a little pricey and didn't really offer a big choice, plus there is plenty on your door step to choose from so didn't mind.
Staff were lovely and enjoyed our breakfast both mornings. All in all it was a nice stay however I wouldn't put it in the higher bracket of some 4* hotels I've stopped in.
I give this a average rating and it was an average stay, I like to always find something that will give me the wow factor and nothing here seemed to do this.
Not at all a picky person I would stay again, but wouldn't want to pay more than £90 per night.
Hope I helped :)
