“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

This hotel was everything as described in the reviews. We thought the staff were polite and friendly. We knew there wasn't a lift so sprinted up the stairs! The location was fantastic for the station, the bus to the zoo (opposite the hotel) and come out of the hotel, turn left, walk 10 minutes and you arrive at a VU cinema complex. We found a great Wetherspoons on George Street, very busy but didn't wait long for food. I would definately stay at the Ballantrae Hotel again, clean, hot water and a good feeling!

“Great Location, badly needs refurbished”

My husband and I have just returned from this hotel yesterday. We were very disappointed in the hotel, not what we expected after booking through laterooms.com, nothing like the photos. We were located in the ground floor of the hotel, room 17, right next to the door for the car park. This door was constantly open and shut through the night, someone smoking, we never got a goods nights sleep in the 2 nights we were there. The room was in much need of refurbishment and the shower needed regrouting. The whole place looked like it needed a serious lick of paint. The breakfast was good but the bar expensive, we were charged £21 for a bottle of echo falls, we did not know it would be this price until we left as the bar/night porter did not know the price. We won't fall for that one again. The location is excellent though, 2 minutes and you are on Princes Street and the National Portrait Gallery is a few yards up the street across the road. It did not spoil are short break but were disappointed with the accommodation but sure there are worse places but would definitely not choose or recommend to anyone. The staff were friendly and happy to accommodate.

Room Tip: Not on the ground floor

“A lovely hotel in a lovely area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

We arrived at the Ballantrae hotel for the weekend and we were warmly welcomed, the hotel is within reasonable walking distance of the bus stop for the airport. We were giving the keys to our room, the room was light and airy, very clean and well maintained, the bathroom was big and pleasant, and the beds were very comfortable, after reading reviews about the breakfast we decided to give it a go opting out of the £5 charge for a fry and going for the continental breakfast. It was lovely more than adequate, they had fresh fruit, cereals, orange juice, waffles, yogurts, croissants, all the condiments you would ever need, they offered tea or coffee and also toast, it was a real feast, the first morning we had to wait on a table but this was no problem we went out and had a little walk returning 5 minutes later to find a table ready for us. We had a very nice stay at this hotel, coming and going as we pleased it was in a perfect location to visit Edinburgh it is a beautiful city and we will definitely be returning again :D

“A great stay at the Ballantrae Hotel, even though just for one night.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

While visiting a relative living in Glasgow and this being our first trip to Scotland, we felt the urge to spend a fair bit of time in Edinburgh. We decided to look for a reasonably priced hotel to spend Saturday night not too far from the great sights of Edinburgh. Arriving at Waverly train station we were kind of overwhelmed by the many tourists going all directions. Had to ask our way to Albany Street, where this hotel is located, but found our way and all in all not that far from the train station, some 1000 m. The reception area was not very impressive nor was the way we were welcomed, got the impression we had to rush to register (we had already booked thru booking.com some days earlier). We could leave our luggage since we arrived well before 1400 hrs to check-in. We did some impressive sight seeing (the sights were impressive and most within short walking distances) and when we returned to the hotel we could use our room on the ground floor. The room looked very cozy and warm, nice furniture, great bathroom, featuring a large shower head which was a bit odd to turn on and off. There was a prefilled waterheater, coffee, choco and tea to make our own drinks. Close to the hotel we found our choice of restaurant (Thai), watched a movie in our room, had a good sleep and the next morning breakfast was of superb quality even though the buffet was moderate. Good service though, any type of eggs could be ordered at no extra charge. Check-out went smoothly and friendly. For sure a hotel to recommend to friends and family.
