“Charming stylish well-run hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

We arrived 6 hours before chek-in time & were heartily welcomed and accomodated immediately. Rooms are spacious, tastefully furnished, with high moulded ceilings and large beautiful windows overlooking the city and river. English breakfast (substantial and tasteful) was served in a gorgeous room with fireplace & balcony.
Hotel is located in a quiet district, it takes about 5-7 minutes to walk to Princess street &15-20 min. to Royal Mile.
We would definitely stay here when we are next time in Edinborough!

Room Tip: For the best view choose thr rooms overlooking Belford Rd.

“Character and Charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2011

Enjoyed our stay here. The worst thing about this hotel was that our room was a little small but the staff were friendly. Did not have any facilities for washing clothes and there was no close laudromats nor did the motel wash them for you. Breakfast was good. The hotel was within walking distance of the city centre.
The hotel architecture and fittings were tastefully renovated.

“Really nice hotel”

Recommended by a colleague for a business trip I wasn't expecting too much. However, from the moment I arrived I was absolutely delighted.
Interesting and quirky old place loaded with character which is exactly what you want from a hotel in a city like Edinburgh.
The staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful recommending some good restaurants that I really appreciated.
The room was spotless with fantastic views and comfy beds. Breakfast was great and I really can't fault the place.
If you want corporate blandness don't bother with this place. If you want old fashioned charm and good service, don't hesitate!

“Elegant, characterful hotel in a first class location close to city centre.”

Late booking on a 2 night stay up with friends to watch the Rugby international at Murrayfield. Melvin House was a great find at a very reasonable price for 2 twin bedded rooms. Set in a charming, elegant, quiet part of Georgian Edinburgh yet only a short walk from Princes Street and all the city centre attractions. This grand townhouse hotel is full of character, has friendly staff, large clean bedrooms and a very good breakfast. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

One last snippet for those who are interested; on street car parking is pay by meter Monday to Friday but is free at weekends.

“Dated but quirky.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2011

My boyfriend and I found a great deal online so booked up straight away. We weren't expecting anything too plush because of the price and also the photos show that the hotel isn't too modern (they have kept a dated fashion to suit the building).

The reception is quite dark and gave me the feeling that we were in some of horror film but it was very quaint. The reception desk is tucked round the corner which I thought was sweet.

We stayed in the four poster bed room which was lovely, again dated but lovely. The sheets were clean, as was the bathroom. The sink is in the main room next to the bathroom but adds to the character of the whole hotel. The room was quite and warm (just make sure you turn the radiator up). We were doing cartwheels in the room, so that shows how spacious it is!!

The breakfast was amazing! We were slightly hungover so needed a good hearty breakfast and that is what we got. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

One thing you MUST do if you stay there...have a look at the library in the hotel, you will feel like you have just discovered a secret room! It really is worth a look.

Location is great. 3 minute walk to the West End (cool shops, bars and restaurants) and a 10 minute walk to the main shopping strip.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay. One downside is the parking. We went on a Saturday and the parking is free AFTER 6.30 and all day Sunday but is £2.00 per hour before that right outside the hotel. The hotel do offer alternatives that are free but a 10 minute walk away.
