I spent two nights in the Holiday Inn with my girlfriend for the Calcutta Cup match. The hotel was very busy the first night, which we had expected, whilst the second night was much quieter. We were under the impression there was free parking at the hotel but as it was so busy we had to park in the Zoo's parking which is basically an extension of the hotels with plenty of spaces. That set us back £10 of which only £4 could be claimed back at the reception. I know Its only a £6 fee, but an unexpected parking fee is not a pleasant way to begin a stay in a hotel.
Once checked in by the friendly receptionist we went to our room. The minute we stepped out the lift into the 1st floor corridor there was the distinct smell of smoke. In our room it was a bit stuffy and also smelt a little smokey. When we put the air conditioning on it made the smokey smell a lot worse. This left us in a pickle, the windows on our floor were all locked for our "safety" which meant we had to put up with being in a stuffy, smokey smelling room. As we were out of the hotel for the majority of our stay it was tolerable, but we struggled to get a good night sleep both nights of our stay.
On the first morning we went for breakfast which was fine, lots of variety in a buffet format. We had lots of valuables loose in our room so we put up the Do Not Disturb sign whilst we were away. However, when we returned from breakfast someone had come into our room and made the bed. We checked to see if the Do Not Disturb sign was still up and it was. I can safely say I have never had that happen to me before in any hotel I've stayed in. It may have just been an innocent mistake, perhaps the cleaner was in a rush to finish rooms? None the less, it still upset my girlfriend, she felt like her privacy had been invaded.
Another unexpected cost was the internet. I had not checked the hotels website beforehand to see if internet access was free in hotel rooms or not, but quite frankly the only place I would expect to pay for internet is at a Hostel. Paying for internet access might have been okay if the rates were cheap, however, I just couldn't bring myself to pay more than I would at home for a months unlimited access for what would have only been one days internet access in our room.
Therefore, despite the friendly staff, nice dining facilities, we both left the hotel with no real desire to stay there again. My girlfriend wanted to complain when we checked out but we decided that because the receptionists had been so friendly during our stay it would be unfair to burden them for something that was not their fault. Hopefully this review will result in some of our issues being resolved for other guests, especially the smokeyness and room invasion.
