Having previously enjoyed many a stay at the Green's Hotel, I was dissappointed to learn that it had closed down and had been bought over by the Travelodge chain. Desperate for accommodation on a visit to the Edinburgh Tattoo this year, we booked two rooms in the new Travelodge. What a let down! There is absolutely no atmosphere at all in the building now. The reception area has been painted a bland white all over with not even a plant or two to make it more welcoming. The bedrooms appear to have been unchanged apart from all the nice real wood panelling being painted over in white again. The floors still creaked, which you might expect from an old building with character but NOT from a newly re-opened establishment. No soap, shampoo, bath mat etc - they say on the website that this allows them to keep the price low but, for £99 per room per night, I think we were overcharged. The old Greens had a beautiful dining room where the food and the service was excellent but I didn't bother eating in the Travelodge - it was too depressing.
