We booked a one week stay at the Salisbury Hotel over Hogmanay (the Scottish New Year celebration) because of its proximity to our son's flat in Newington. The hotel was perfect for us. We chose a four-poster room in case other family members joined us. They didn't, and we lavished in the spacious, high-ceilinged, well-appointed room (with decorative fireplace and handsome mirrors). The zero-edge shower took some getting used to, but the deep bath was excellent for luxuriating.
A continental breakfast buffet was served each morning just a few stairsteps away in space shared with the separately owned and operated Cafe Cassis. The buffet was excellent. We also dined in the (tiny) restaurant one evening, and it was superb (Reviewed elsewhere).
Staff was friendly and most accommodating to our every need, which included organizing taxis and aiding our late-day arrival and early-morning departure. We were sent on our way with a breakfast basket that included juice, flavored yogurt, fruit, croissants and granola bars.
The hotel is just off a main street handy to ATMs, grocers, neighborhood pubs and restaurants, and wonderful bus service to the City Center. We chose to travel by taxi, and cabs were very available at all times of day. The property is child-friendly, with play structures adjoining the back gardens. Holyrood Park is a short walk away for those who want to stretch their legs, or climb to the summit of Arthur's Seat or the Salisbury Crags, two imposing topographical features of the city.
The hotel's rates for the special period of our visit were not cheap, but represented goodvalue in my opinion. I would not hesitate to book another visit to this well-run establishment.
