“Not just any 5 star hotel but one where the staff go that extra mile to make you feel special”

My wife and I spent a long weekend in Edinburgh having chosen the hotel online. When we go away without the kids (a very rare thing) we like to spoil ourselves and tend to choose the nice things in life. Our first impressions of the hotel were fantastic, perfect location in the heart of Edinburgh and a gorgeous building just next to the main railway. We ended up getting the bus from the airport which dropped us virtually outside the hotel (much quicker and cheaper than a taxi). As soon as we wondered into reception we noticed the difference. In this hotel, the staff are not only friendly, but they went out of their way to make us feel special. Within a matter of hours the staff knew us as Mr and Mrs xxxx. They helped with organising our weekend activities and also dinner reservations. The staff at some other 5 star hotels we have stayed in generally look down at you unless you are spending big bucks with them or are staying in their executive suites. However not in The Balmoral, they made us feel special the moment we walked through reception.
A special note has to go out to The Concierge 'Andy', whom bent over backwards to help guide us to the best tourist spots, rearrange dinner reservations and just generally take that extra effort to be warm and friendly to us both.
I also have to mention the Sommelier we met in the Bolinger bar (apologies but we've forgotten her name). She took time out to go through all the wines she had personally chosen for the hotel and also gave us a brief background of all the wines the hotel sold.
I felt this type of service would have been put aside for those clients whom had paid the most and had the most luxurious rooms, however even though we had chosen the Classic Room, we were made to feel like royalty.
Highlights: The most welcoming staff we have ever come across, The Bolinger bar, the spa, The great Brasserie, its location and a great city
All in all a fantastic hotel. We will be back.

Room Tip: Even the basic 'Classic Rooms' are rather special, you wont need to upgrade.

“Well placed , friendly hotel”

Excellent welcome on arrival, car taken away by valet parking with no hassle at all. Check in fine, slight issue with electronic keys but quickly solved.
Room a long walk from lift but functional with all you could wish for except a lack of drawer space. Also no tea/ coffee tray provided automatically. Ask for one and it is delivered quickly.

Bath very deep so had to be agile to climb into it.!!

Breakfast was the only meal taken, but very helpful staff and it could not be faulted.

Had a drink in the bar , one glass of wine and a gin/tonic £15.00, so off to pub after that.
Checkout very quick and car returned on time.

Left something in the room, and sadly to say response time so far poor.Still no call back from lost property after calling 12 hrs ago.

“Afternoon Tea and Cocktails”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We came her for afternoon tea (£45 each ) which i thought was really good value. The room is stunning where you have your tea. The service is second to none, you are treated like kings and queens. The tea selection will cater for every taste and i loved it. The cakes, well if you have sweet tooth your in for a massive treat, they are fantastic, and the quanity, more than we could eat. I dont have butter ( pre ordered when booking, which you need to do, as its so popular ) and as requested, they were as ordered.

Overall, a must experience if your in edinburgh.

Later that week we came for cocktails. Again, its just a different class of service and quality, certainly worth trying and tbh it wasnt expensive, infact cheaper than lesser hotels.

“the price tag reflects the luxury and service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

We stayed a few nights between xmas and new year. The rooms, food and bar were all fabulous and the setting on princes street is superb. It is a grand looking building. The meal was excellent value for money- good quality and service. We ordered a cup of tea from room service and they forgot us so we had to phone back but they were very appologestic and didn't charge. I stayed here for free as a student on a course several years ago and the doorman didn't bat an eyelid when he had to park my dishevelled old car. i remeber being thrilled by the hotel then as it was such a treat.

“5 star luxury”

My wife and I have just attended a wedding in the Balmoral Hotel. It is truly worth its 5 star rating. From the moment we arrived we were treated as though we were special. The valet service was a must as parking in Edinburgh is a nightmare. From booking in at reception to our bags arriving at our room, the experience was effortless and quick. The rooms are wonderfully appointed and immaculate. Retiring at the end of an exhausting day, it was nice to find that the bed had been turned down and slippers were placed on either side of the bed. Bottles of water and glasses was also a was a nice touch. Breakfast was a gastronomical treat and the staff a delight. Unfortunately we did not have time to spend at the Spa but friends who did praised it highly. An excellent hotel, good value for money and we would not hesitate in recommending it to anyone visiting Edinburgh.
