“Appearances can deceive”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

I chose this place because I thought it looked like a comfortable place to stay but entering the lobby the deep chill rang alarm bells. The receptionist was friendly enough but promised packed breakfasts that never arrived. He tried to charge us a surplus for using a debit card, this wasn't mentioned on booking.com. The rooms were big but freezing. The towels tiny and thin, the double bed a single and a half, one thin pillow each. The room was very noisy with guests banging doors all night and drunks screaming and singing in the street until 4am and later. They even made my son's bed with his suitcase still in it! I can only assume they thought this is Edinburgh we can charge what we like and no need to worry about service or facilities!

Room Tip: Don't!

Our room needed an update, but it was very spacious and comfortable. They offered a nice breakfast and the staff were very helpful.

“We will be back”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

We decided to stay here even though some of the reviews advised otherwise. We are a family of 5 and enjoyed staying in room 17. The staff were friendly and helpful and breakfast was super. There is a faded charm about Thrums and we felt it served our purpose and was good value for money. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 17 was really large and the 5 of us were very comfortable.

“Not much to say, not bad, far from being perfect - Good enough:)”

We came from California. Booked a family room at The Thrums. We were given room number seventeen which was huuuuuuge with an enermous mirror. There was 5 of us and still a lot of space. Room a bit noisy as it was on one of main streets but it is like that everywhere in Edinburgh. Anyway - it was worth. I would definitely go back there again. Generally: clean, good location, nice helpful staff, value for money and watching birds eating toasts from the glass conservatory. The only thing i would not reccomend is the scottish weather!!!

Room Tip: Ask for the room in building number 15 - they are muuuuch nicer!

“We would definitely go back.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

The hotel comprises a pair of very large semi-detached houses. They look a little tired but were obviously very residences at one time. The room we had as a family room was huge, with very high ceilings, giving a lovely feeling of space. The location was excellent, on a main bus route into the city centre, which could also be reached by a 20 minute level walk, which took us right to the Royal Mile and all the bustle of the Festival Fringe. The fixtures and fittings were OK but not all perfect, there were one or two small niggles. Breakfast was taken in a fairly small breakfast room or a pleasant little conservatory that adjoined it. The food was pretty standard B&B fare (but starngely bacon is not served even though sausages etc. etc. are). The service can be a bit slow at busy times. The staff are very friendly and this makes up for the minor niggles. Miron, who seemed to do everything, was excellent. He was knowledgeable, helpful and efficient. We told him about something in our room that was faulty, it was fixed and working perfectly by the time we returned that evening. This was typical of him. Top man!
