I was looking for a small, comfortable hotel convenient to the center city but at a little distance from the melee that is the Edinburgh Festivals in late August. I couldn't have been happier with Six Mary's Place. The building itself is a lovely old residence set back from the street; my room seemed to have been recently redecorated and overlooked the back garden, so it was quiet as well as being fresh, comfortable and immaculately clean with several thoughtful touches not usually found at the price. Stockbridge struck me as a slightly bohemian area with the usual stores one finds in a city neighborhood, as well charity shops, bookstores, a couple of nice restaurants, and a wonderful contemporary jeweler. Bus stop down the street from the hotel was convenient for late-evening returns from the theatre and I felt completely safe walking back to the hotel. Jonathan and Edith, the two managers I dealt with, were unfailingly friendly and helpful and had maps, bus schedules and brochures at the ready. In addition to being "green", the hotel prides itself on its social awareness and some of the breakfast-room and cleaning staff are disabled trainees who work under the supervision of permanent staff. ( I was told that several former trainees have graduated to regular jobs in other Edinburgh hotels.) The occasional slight awkwardnesses of service in the breakfast room, I thought, were consequently understandable. The breakfast conservatory itself was nicely appointed and I thought the vegetarian breakfasts were tasty and varied. Next time I'm in Edinburgh, Six Mary's Place would be my first choice for a place to stay.
