“Regent House Hotel, great value accomodation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Just enjoyed a great weekend staying in a clean spaceous family room, which would have slept 5 adult size people with no problem, lots of hot water and excellent shower pressure. Having read some other reviews we nearly didn't book - how wrong they were. We had a lovely room at the front of this marvelous Recency House. Some beautiful features. Though a full cooked breakfast wasn't on the menu, we did not go hungry with pleanty of choice of cereal, coissants, bread and cold meat, juice and fruit, we enjoyed our eggs on toast. We had a good value stay for what we paid and thoroughly enjoyed our time in Edinburgh. Spotless sheets, very helpful hard working staff, who seemed to be doing their very best, made us feel very welcome. If your looking for a good value base for a family break Regent house is Ideal .

“Just fine”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

The triple room which we booked is very small. We can hardly move around. The bathroom was also small and no soap was provided. Breakfast was very basic with bread, eggs and cereals.
The stairs (there was no elevator) were very steep, so careful if you have heavy luggage.
The only positive thing which I can say is the free wifi which is accessible from the room. The hotel is located within walking distance from the central district so no need for a taxi when you come by train with no heavy luggage.

Room Tip: Choose the lower floor when you have heavy luggage.

“Absolutely awful”

No hot water for the duration and if there had been the base of the shared shower was cracked and old. The bed was comfy and the sheets were clean but there were cobwebs on the ceiling. It was impossible to regulate the radiator so in contrast to the water the room became very hot despite my having the window open. The staff were pleasant and tried to be helpful but there was little they could do and the manager was away. I have to stay in Edinburgh fairly often but will not be returning to this hotel.....

“RUN, do not walk away from this place!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

Who EVER heard of a hotel that didn't have "legal" parking so you could off load your bags? In the time it took to check in and lug our suitcases to the third floor (no elevator), we had a GBP 50 parking ticket on our rental car! When I asked the manager, she replied, "oh, yes - they're very strict about that." What??? The hotel is located on a "private street" so ONLY vehicles with permits can park there. Wouldn't you think the owners of this place would make arrangements for their guests to at least be able to safely check in without getting a ticket? I asked that the management provide me with a letter to give to the local authorities explaining the situation and was told "it won't help." Perhaps they get a portion? The room was terrible. We had to prop open the windows as the sashes were all broken. The bathroom was so small that it was a feat to be able to open the shower door once the bathroom door was closed. The only bright spot were the young staff that really hustled to serve the breakfast. We left THEM a nice tip. But I would never, never, NEVER stay in this hotel again.

“Not bad at all!!”

Just stayed here with 4 other mates for lads weekend. When we arrived we were informed the family room was double booked but we were to be 'upgraded' into the Apartments. We went back out the hotel and in next door to the apartments and downstairs into what looked like a dungeon from outside!! We had nothing to fear though as it was perfect for a group of lads; 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a nice sitting room with tele and a kitchen. We chucked the bags in and off we went out. This was our 17th year to E'boro so we know the City very well and the hotel is in a perfect position, onto Princes St if you want shopping, Rose St if you want bars and George St if you want something a bit nicer. Copious amounts of Guinness later, we returned about 7pm to chill for a couple of hours with a cuppa and the tele in the sitting room, which was comfy. Out we went again for the evening to the pubs/smart bars round George St area and ended up in the Jamhouse nightclub which is less than 5 minutes walk away from the hotel. Returning at 3.30am there's an all night chippy on the corner of the hotel which suited us lads. We all slept soundly and missed breakfast so I can't comment on that. We made some bacon growlers in the room and relaxed for late breakfast with the papers. We had a late train so we left the bags in the hotel and off we went for a stroll round the gardens in front of the castle and a nice walk to the Grassmarket....just in time for the pubs to open at 12 where we enjoyed the Irish bars and a top up of Guinness. We picked the bags up late and got to the station for the train. We would defo stop here again as it suited our needs, so give it a try...you might just like it!!
