“Not as good as expected, but comfortable and pleasant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 May 2011

From reading the reviews on this site we were very excited about our stay in Barony House. The lady who greeted us on arrival was very friendly and pleasant. She checked us in quickly, explained how to order breakfast. The room was a nice size, bright and clean with a big and very comfortable bed - we slept really well. The bathroom was very small but quite clean. The shower wasn't very powerful but it did the job! In the toiletries basket I found an old, half-used bottle of shampoo - not sure if that was supposed to be complimentary or the maid failed to see that it had been left behind by another guest. We had a small decanter of sherry and two glasses in the room which was a nice tough. The breakfast room was very dated. We were told at check in that when we came down to breakfast there would be a small wait as the eggs would be freshly cooked, so when we got down we helped ourselves to cereal and fruit salad and waited for the eggs to be ready. After a 15-20 minute wait we went up to the hot food section and realised that our eggs had been cooked and placed on there without us being told. They had been placed in a small pot in a bowl of hot water but were lukewarm by the time we served them up - it would have been nice to have been told how the breakfast system actually worked or when our eggs were ready! We were given the wrong toast two mornings in a row, and there was no haggis left even though I ordered some. The rest of the breakfast was nice but really nothing special and some things had obviously been sat there for a while, after reading the reviews we expected something pretty good! As I said before the lady was very friendly but did not seem to have a very good knowledge of the area - she knew about some restaurants on the same road but couldn't recommend anything further afield. She also did not know what number bus we had to catch into town or how often they came - we eventually worked this out for ourselves. We had reserved a parking space (there is only one) which was really handy as it was just outside - it would have been a bit annoying if we'd had to park further away. Overall, it was a comfortable, clean and pleasant stay in a good location - not the height of luxury, but a reasonable price for what you get!

Room Tip: Book a parking space in advance!

It is always disapointing to get a review when someone is not happy, but please let me give you some background. We were on holiday when these guests stayed at Barony House and as much as Iwe would love to say that everything is exactly the same when we are not here unfortunately it is not. We had a professional relief manager looking after our house who does not come from Edinburgh so her local knowledge of restaurants and directions is poor however in each guestroom there is a book detailing and recommending local restaurants with a map of their locations, also in the Guest Folder there is a sheet with local bus information (numbers and destinations etc) to take with you when you go into town. Having said all this there is no excuse for poorly cooked food or poor service. We take the utmost care when when we are in the kitchen ourselves and the service we offer in the dining room which is reflected in our other reviews but it is impossible to have the same quality control when we are not here although we do try to employ the best possible holiday relief managers available.

“Nice place, worth staying at.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 April 2011

Comfortable clean downstairs room, touch on the cramped side though; even had a complimentary nip of malt for those who indulge. Comprehensive attractions guide, handy enough for the centre by bus, although we found we could walk everywhere and needed to after the large good breakfast. Only drawback with that was that you had to preorder the cooked part (understandable), and tea or coffee (incomprehensible). That was the only drawback. We've stayed at 4 other places in Edinburgh and this was the best. More of a B & B than a hotel (which I would expect to have evening meals and a bar).

“It's all in the details”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 March 2011

This is a great place to stay! The staff is friendly and helpfull but not intrusive. They had no problem at all with checking in late (after 11pm). The rooms are clean and nicely furnished. The beds are comfortable and the bathroom has enough room too. Our room had a nice view of the garden in which we could see many birds.
The breakfast is very nice and there are many options too choose from.
This B&B is also near a busstop and many nice restaurants so a perfect location. And the best detail: every day our decanter was refilled with a nice whisky liqueur and we also got some nice Scottish cookies!

“very good B&B, nice family”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 March 2011

The B&B is really great !!! We had a superb breakfast, everything was clean and well maintained. The location is ok, you have several busstops in the surrounding, the busses arrive every few minutes. The travel time to town is about 10-15 minutes, depending on, where you want to go. So we can recommend this house, we would come again !!!!!
