“Good but not brilliant 4*”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We stayed mid-week, and it was the venue for a conference which meant the commmon areas were quite busy during the day. Our room was in the new part of the hotel and the bathroom in particular was getting very tired. It definitely a complete overhaul, and the shower was hard to regulate, going hot and cold without warning. Oddly enough for a 4* hotel, they did not replenish the shampoo etc on the second day.

Having said that, the bed was very good, and from my point of view the bed is pretty much the most important part of a stay. Also, we found the staff very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was good.

Overall, it was a nice stay and I would stay again, but it is a good quality conference hotel rather than a top place to say for rest and relaxation.

It is just around the corner from Rose Street which has lots of places to eat within about 2 minutes walk. We ate at a Mexican restauraunt, Miros Cantina, which was quite good. Almost next door to that was Wildfire restaurant which looked excellent if you wanted a great steak or fish, but we weren't hungry enough to justify the price. We also had a snack meal at a TGI Friday which was only a few streets away and it was good fun and tasty food.

“Disappointing Spa”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We especially chose this hotel for the spa which we were particualry looking forward to after a gruelling fell race in the afternoon. What a disappointment. There was a decent enough sized pool but no jacuzzi and only 2 loungers squeezed onto one edge of the pool. However, even if there had have been more loungers, the temperature of the whole area was not condusive to lounging around. We were also disappointed that there were no robes. The shower next to the sauna and steam room (which were fine by the way) was tepid. In the changing rooms there was no spinner for wet costumes and the roll of poly bags for, very wet, costumes was empty. The whole feel of the pool area was very 'tired' and in need of re-grouting, re-tiling and generally updating.
Our room was pleasant enough, although a little dark, because of only one window and, again, we would have liked robes in the room. The breakfast was excellent and the staff were polite and friendly. If you pay for the underground car parking make sure you ask for very clear directions to find it. It won't come up on your sat-nav and it is very difficult to find.

Room Tip: One guest we were talking too had a generator running outside her room all night so make sure you do...

“Excellent location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012 via mobile

Good hotel within walking distance of the castle and The Royal Mile, just round the corner from Princes St. Comfortable room with huge bed and the best shower I have ever had in a hotel. Bar seemed very dark

“Perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012 via mobile

Just stayed at hotel for a mini break, really friendly staff that go above and beyond, made us feel really welcome. The hotel is located seconds away from Princes Street, minutes from the castle and generally ideal for most things. The rooms were lovely. And the breakfast was dee-lish. Would definitely stay again.

“Not pleased at all, try somewhere else!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

We stayed here as part of a conference, and couldn't be more disappointed.
Sad because after flying 'Sega Class' on Iceland Air and staying at 'Huntingtower Lodge' in Fort William (Scotland Highlands) we were expecting similarly great experiences. (see our review of Huntingtower Lodge)
There is a reason this hotel is rated 64 of 137 in Edinburgh, as of this date.
The bathroom heater (and towel warmer) didn't work, when we asked to have it looked at, the reception desk was very rude and told me to talk to the Concierge.
When the maintenance person arrived he tried to fix it but couldn't (not his fault, he tried), he asked the front desk to get us a new room, but the hotel was (for some reason) "fully booked".
Front desk was condescending and said "sorry, we tried" and that was it.
Maintenance person was able to fix the shower that was stuck on HOT (scalding HOT).

We ran out of toilet paper and when asking at the front desk, was told to 'talk to the Concierge' again. (Front desk has an attitude of 'not my job').

We're surely not going to recommend this to anyone, and respectfully suggest you look elsewhere if you're looking for top quality amenities and pleasant service. (You won't find either here). (Although the maintenance gentleman was very very kind and apologetic that he couldn't fix the heater).

LIke to pay for normally free items?
-Want to check out late? Be prepared for 20 POUNDS per HOUR after 11 AM.
-Want Internet? Be prepared to pay, it is not offered for free, $10 Pounds per 24 hours. (Hint, use the free internet down the road at the "Benjamin Franklin ...." pub. We had breakfast there that was very good.
-Don't forget the 2% 'credit card fee'

When checking out we were asked how we enjoyed our stay.
I was honest, saying that it was 'OK'. One receptionist asked me "why just ok?" to which I replied with all of the issues we had.
The other front desk woman who I had dealt with about the heater and shower interrupted and said "I sent him up, did he not get there?" I replied (politely) that "Yes he did show up" (I would have thought that she would have followed up the day before, a 4 start hotel would have). I explained that "he tried but couldn't fix it...." She interrupted and said "well, I sent him up we tried..." and that was it. No- "sorry" no discount, nothing. I was NOT impressed!
This is NOT 4 Star service. I'd of received better service at a Best Western Hotel.

Room Tip: Room 303 was facing a very VERY busy street, but had a 3 sided (albeit very drafty) window. Single...
