“Excellent would stay again!”

Stayed here last week for 2 nights, check in was very quick lady on reception very polite and helpful. Room was just as you would expect for a thistle hotel, clean, tidy, tea/coffee facilities. The only minor problem we had was someone was smoking in room next to us on the first night, but had no problems after that.

Would recommend this hotel and stay again as very central only 5 minutes walk to waverley train station.

“Will definitely give it a miss next time”

If memory serves me correctly, they claim 4 star rating yet there was no aircon and the ceiling fan made more noise than the traffic in the street. The latter being extremely noisy as I had to open the window to cool the room down. There was coffee but no indication as to where it was. I stumbled across it by accident. All in all, it falls quite a long way short of what one might expect of a 4 star hotel.

Room Tip: If they are all the same as mine was, go somewhere else.

“Good Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Mature couple. Booked overnight stay to be in the City centre.Good location near theatre/cinema/restaurants. Room clean and spacious although, as to be expected, there was some traffic noise. Not so good was being able to hear the occupants of the next room. Glad the room was discounted, it certainly was not worth the advertised rate.
Hotel advertised parking on site(at a cost) - forget it - you would not want to leave your car there. Use the adjacent NCP car park - the hotel will validate the ticket and you get a discount. There are plenty of places for breakfast within a few minutes and they are cheaper than hotel. The check in guy was not the friendliest, however, the mature morning lady was superb. If only more recptionists were like her.

“Very average - rooms & attitude of hotel need renovating”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

We booked this hotel for three nights, arriving on New Years day. On arrival the reception was empty, attempted to check into the room and we were very rudely told that we could not check in despite it being past the 2pm check in time. The manner of the receptionist was awful, she suggested we go away and come back in an hours time, we instead chose to wait in the reception, which seemed to be of great annoyance to her. After waiting for ten minutes, lots of other arrivals went to the desk and more than a few seemed to get checked in!, we then had to wait at the end of the queue to get checked in, obviously this is not what you expect from a four star hotel.

Finally got checked in about 30 minutes after arriving and after complaining a different receptionist on the counter finally understood why we were angry and booked us into a double room, instead of the twin room that we had originally booked. This made up for the awful check in experience.

The room itself was a bit on the small side, but pleasant, lovely bed and nice furniture. However the walls seriously could do with a lick of paint and the bathroom was dated. The view from our room was awful, looked onto the back of the shopping centre. There was a kettle and biscuits etc provided in room, which was good and there was an area in the hotel hallway where you could get ice for the ice bucket, which was great, really good feature that I have not seen in other hotels.

The location was perfect and was the sole reason that we actually picked the hotel. It is 5 minutes from Princes Street and close to local amenities and the St James Shopping Centre, which you can enter directly from the hotel (without having to go out in the cold!).

Rooms were cleaned daily and to a good standard. Checking out was far better than checking in and the reception stored our bags for us after checkout time.

This hotel has a lot of potential, such a perfect location but it is ashame that it lets itself down on customer service and general up keep of the rooms. The hotel is 3 star, with a 4 star price.

Room Tip: Ask for a room which does not face the back of the shopping centre

“Not what we expected”

Good points : Location, we went up for Hogmanay and the location is excellent. Staff, all the staff were helpful and friendly.

Bad Points: Room - for a 4 star rated hotel we were very dissapointed, the room was small, dated and dirty in placed with Mould in the bathroom and on the windowsills.

We paid a significant amount of money for 2 nights, and we didn't think that what we paid was fair and reasonable.

We told the manager our concerns when we were there, and whilst sympathetic, he said there was nothing he could do as the hotel was fully booked (No suprise for Hogmanay !), but told us to write to the hotel on our return - we did this and the manager was very understanding and explained that the hotel was undergoing a re-furbishment and offered us a partial refund, or a complimentary stay in the re-furbished rooms. so they obviously do consider the customer.

If we had the oppurtunity to return to the hotel post re-furbishment, I think we would try them out again, however I would want assurances abot the room before we booked again.
