Good GRIEF what to write about this place. Well here is what I wrote in the guest book: "Interesting place, shame about the breakfast." I was being *very* kind.
I stayed here for two nights during the Edinburgh Festival and it was appalling. The rates were very high and the owners were clearly cashing in on the Festivals - I have no problem with this, but there was nothing in the hotel to justify the rates. My room (1A) was at the top of the house, and looked like a madman had gone beserk with chintz. It was extremely poky, more like a small storeroom, and very cold as they had left the window open despite it being both cold and raining outside. The look was extremely dated - according to their leaflet they are 19th Century style with 21st century conveniences, but I saw very little of the modern touch. This 19th Century [--] is clearly a front they use to avoid having to decorate!
There was no soap or shower gel in the bathroom, which I always rely on in B&Bs to avoid having to pack too much. Ironically, I had just come from another place where I'd been tempted to pinch these items but hadn't. Luckily my parents had another room there and had the foresight to pack their own. The showeroom was smaller than a broom cupboard with barely enough space for the shower itself, which had a door that was broken and only worked from the outside, so I had to shower with it open!
There's not much more to say about this room. It was strangely creepy and the only thing going for it was the TV. The coverlet over the bedding was really stained.
The breakfast - "Scottish Breakfast" consisted of one 'sausage' that was the lowest quality mealy-type, two rashers of undercooked bacon that was predominantly fat, a very horrible egg and less than a tablespoon of beans - sadly the beans were the best bit. Which part of this was the 'Scottish' part? The highlight of breakfast was the toast, but only because it's hard to mess up toast. The man serving me had a hearing aid, which is fine of course but he couldn't hear what I was asking for, saying 'yes' and then just ignoring me - eventually I had to ask his wife for my order. In a nutshell, this was a 'breakfast' made with the cheapest, lowest quality ingredients possible, with no attention to service.
I am at a loss to imagine who could have gifted this place with its 4 stars - 2 star and I would have been satisified with the place. I work in a hotel myself and would be ashamed to offer up such a pathetic and half-hearted service to people. FAIL.
