Had a long weekend here in February for my partners birthday.
Upon arrival we were a few hours early but thought to double check the room wasn't ready. The lady at the desk called the cleaners and asked, and we were told that our room would be ready at 1 (an hour earlier than standard check in). We were happy with that so trundled off to get some lunch and come back. They offered to store our luggage for us, but it wasn't necessary.
When we came back we were put in room 4109, which is at the front of the 4th floor. The view from the window was the Castle, which we were so pleased about.
The room itself was modern and clean, and had the facilities expected of a chain hotel. The bed was comfy and huge cushions and big fluffy pillows. Only slight niggle was that the cushions seemed to have some kind of stains all down them - not sure what this was, but they were thrown onto the chair and forgotten about.
There is a fridge which is a bonus, and complimentary tea, coffee, and galaxy hot chocolate, alongside some biscuits, jelly beans, pringles and a couple of bottles of water. Only thing that would have been nice is for some proper milk in the fridge (I have seen this before), instead of the little tubs of long life stuff.
The bathroom had a bath and wet room style shower which was a bonus. The bath was a nice deep one, and not the rubbish ones usually found in chain hotels that are only about 6 inches deep. I enjoyed a long soak with the complimentary Elemis bubble baths and it was wonderful. Also, the bath was right next to a window so provided you weren't being watched you could happily have a people watch whilst in the tub - but of course there were blinds if not!
The location of the hotel is second to none. Lots of bars, restaurants, and takeaways on your doorstep and only a stones throw up some very steep steps to the castle and royal mile area. Yes people moan about the noise but we were at the front and whilst I woke up once as I needed the loo and could here the noise, it didn't keep me awake. If it was to, the hotel do provide ear plugs.
From what we saw, the car park was a bit of a nightmare. We tried to park there twice but never found a space, so eventually parked on the road for our stay. May have been more inclined to find a space in the car park had it not been free to park on the road on a Sunday. I believe the car park costs £8 per 24 hours.
We got room service one night. My partner had a pizza with chips and I had a tuna sandwich. My sandwich was served with crisps, red cabbage, and olives/sundried tomatos and cost £6.95. My partner enjoyed his pizza and the chips were proper chunky chips. Very impressed that instead of little pots of condiments we were provided with four glass jars for no extra fee. It was quite expensive at £19 for all this but hey, thats room service for you!
The only thing I would suggest to improve the hotel was to add a couple more personal touches. It was a lovely hotel but it just felt that the rooms had something missing. However saying this I wouldn't hesitate to return.
