From the outside the hotel looks like a 1960s bank but inside it is cutting edge design. Perhaps, as other reviewers have said, too cutting; the jagged black and white zig-zags and great slashes of tutti fruiti colour could produce persistence of vision after a while. Nevertheless, the delightful staff are the essence of charm and efficiency. The hotel offers valet parking and is convenient for all the attractions on the Royal Mile. Princes Street is within easy walking distance if you don't mind steep hills, and the famous Greyfriars Kirk is close by.
The rooms are compact so it is worth booking a suite - and as others have said, do ask for a bath. But should you have to ask for a bath in a five star hotel? Happily, there is very little street noise in the rooms which is unusual for Edinburgh City Centre. (We stayed on Floor 5, may be noisier below.) Beds in the suites are pleasantly large and firm.
The restaurant is trendy, the staff are efficient and friendly but my Buffalo Mozzarella was served with pickled beetroot from a jar; surely chef could have roasted some fresh ones and £13.50 for a plate of cheese for one, was a tad steep. There are plenty of less expensive places to eat locally.
There is a small breakfast order card in the room offering a continental meal but you must phone to order anything more substantial, which makes it all a bit of an effort. It suggested to us, perhaps unfairly, that room service breakfast is mildly discouraged. However our poached eggs were perfectly cooked and served on time. Overall a very positive experience.
