“Friendly host, well done and wonderful homestay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2010

The best thing about Botanics B&B is the friendly and very helpful host (Eleanor). I was impressed when she gave me a list of 7-8 B&Bs when hers wasn’t available for the dates I had initially asked for. We eventually changed dates and stayed at her nice home near the Royal Botanic Gardens. We chatted so much about our travel exploits and she came up with so many suggestions for remote places to visit in Scotland :).

There were absolutely no rules and we also had full access to the kitchen which we could use anytime of the day. No breakfast timings (Edinburgh was the last leg of our 10 day Scotland trip and this was the only B&B with no timings for breakfast!) – but then don’t expect a Scottish breakfast as in other B&Bs around Scotland.

Botanics is situated out of the touristy central area but is easily accessible by bus (short ride) and is also just a 5 min walk from Stockbridge which is a lively area with a bunch of restaurants. The room is not an ensuite and comes with a shared bath (always clean) and is good for a couple or single travelers. The house is nicely decorated and has quite a few small things adding to Eleanor's personal touch. All the basic necessities are taken care of.

Loved the place and would definitely visit again.

PS: If you have a car, note that you can park your car in front of the house for free on the weekends but during the week, it is paid (and is for a maximum of 4 hours). But you can move to a free parking area not too far away.

“Home from home, down to the very last drop of bubble bath!”

Eleanor welcomed 5 weary travellers into her home as her friends. We could use the beautiful kitchen as our home - we made late night cups of tea and my youngest tripped downstairs in the morning in his pyjamas as he usually does at home to sort himself out breakfast and relate his usual 9 year old stories to a very patient Eleanor. It was wonderful to wander down to breakfast at a time to suit ourselves and not be given the usual preemptory hour - always a little too early when in holiday mode. The bedrooms were spacious, very clean and simply but elegantly decorated. The laundry smelt wonderful! The bathroom provided for all your needs, from Molton Brown to White Company. Eleanor's recommendations for places to eat were spot-on and the area around her house is a quiet well-heeled residential area in Edinburgh - well-placed to avoid the over-enthusiastic tourist trade of the Royal Mile. Taxis and buses were however a hand wave away with easy access to the centre. We will certainly use Eleanor's home as a base in any future visits to this city.

“Delightful base to visit Edinburgh!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2010

We stayed at Botanics and loved it! It was a great location. We walked to the Royal Mile (30 minutes). There is a botanical garden right down the street that was an enjoyable walk. The lochs and the highlands are a day trip. Eleanor was a perfect host. The Botanics is small, in a quiet residential section (we were the only guests). It felt more like a homestay than a B&B. Breakfasts were continental with plenty of food. At this point in our trip, we didn't need another full English Country Breakfast anyway. All in all it was a great place to end our trip to the UK.

“Great place, great host”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2010

We had a wonderful two-night stay here. The location is great - right next to the Botanic Gardens and just a walk/ bus ride into town. We felt very much at home from the start - the house is comfortable and laid back and Eleanor is a relaxed and very welcoming host, with plenty of good recommendations for places to eat/ see in the city. Will definitely return!

“The perfect home from home!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2010

We were only in Edinburgh for a quick trip and were looking for a comfortable place to stay for the night - and we couldn't have been more pleased with our choice. The decor is lovely, the beds are divine, the breakfast is delicious and Eleanor the host really made us feel welcome in her home, which is full of the personal touches that made even a short stay memorable. A hidden gem!
