“Good, clean, friendly hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights as we’d come to see the 6 Nations Rugby and as we’d never been to Edinburgh, decided to stay a few days. The hotel was ideal for Murrayfield being only 10 minutes walk. It was quite expensive as of course everything goes up in price quite drastically for rugby weekend. It’s a good hotel, very clean, and the staff were very friendly and helpful with info about places to go, buses, etc. Our room was clean and nicely decorated with good facilities and a good size bathroom but as it was a smallish basement room, with a view of a wall, we found it a little bit claustrophobic. It was also a bit difficult to find the right temperature as the room was boiling when we arrived and even after turning the heat right down, it was still a bit stuffy at night. Breakfast was excellent with everything you could possibly want, although on the morning after the rugby when the hotel was busier the tables were a bit too close together for my liking. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel as it’s very near to all the sights. Just one little thing, when I booked online it says that room amenities include coffee and selected teas and scrumptious cookies. Whilst we had the coffee and selected teas, there was unfortunately no sign of any scrumptious cookies!

“Perfect for City Break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We stayed for a weekend and found the room and service excellent. Great meal at The Skerries Restaurant - with good locally sourced produce. Breakfasts were generous and with good selection of hot and cold. Bus stops immediately outside the hotel allowing ease of access to the city centre. Buses were frequent and arrived when the electronic signboard said they would. Staff were also helpful with local information and warnings of things to be careful of ie transport re-routing due to tram works. Would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Our room at the back was very quiet, could not even hear the trains.

“Nice stay in Edinburgh”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012 via mobile

I have recently returned following a stay here during a weekend in Edinburgh for the six nations rugby.

Overall I would say that the hotel is nice, clean and comfortable. We had a room on the ground floor and found the bedroom to be well finished and modern. I have to say that for the amount of money that we paid being woken up in the middle of the night from noise outside of the room and upstairs is not acceptable.

The hotel is in a great location, 5 minute walk from Heymarket train station and the same again to Murrayfield for the rugby. The centre is not too far either about 30 minute walk or you can get a bus from outside the hotel and that will take about 5 minutes.

The breakfast and service were both ok, there was a function taking place in the hotel which limited the fact we could use the lounge and bar in the daytime leading up to the rugby which I thought was a little disappointing as we were not told until we had arrived at the hotel.

Like I said for the rugby very good location and during a six nations weekend you have to understand prices are going to be at a premium. Overall a nice stay.

“DON'T STAY ON A SIX NATIONS RUGBY WEEKEND”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We booked to stay in this hotel for two nights for the Six Nations Rugby match between Scotland and England ( 3rd & 4th of February 2012 ). We chose it because of it's location and it's small intimate atmosphere - we were not disappointed with the room ( beautiful ) and the staff ( fantastic and very professional ). We liked the fact we could go to the match, have a meal in the town afterwards ( advise anyone visiting during the six nations season to BOOK a restaurant ) and then return to the comfort of the hotel bar to finish off the night with a nightcap or two!. WRONG - What the management had omitted to tell us when booking was that they had arranged for a private function to use the bar and dining area from lunchtime onwards on match day ( thus shortening our breakfast times due to preparation of the area for the lunch ), continuing til late in the evening. If we had been told this information at the time of booking then we would have gone elsewhere. We were told to use the sister hotel ( The Dunstane hotel ) on the opposite side of the busy road - BUT guess what - they had also booked out the dining area there and the occupents of the two hotels were expected to stand like sardines in a tiny bar area overflowing into the entrance area /reception area and stairs. We found this to be a deceiptful way to sell rooms at inflated prices ( expected for the rugby weekend ) without the basic comforts expected to be incorperated in the price -i.e a bar and lounge. We will definately go back to Edinburgh but not to this hotel. We were angry at the way the management were no where to be seen thus leaving the staff to take the full wrath of some very angry residents and believe me there were many ( the young foreign lady on breakfast duty on the Sunday morning did a magnificent job - she shouldn't have had to defend the hotel management like that and no doubt she doesn't get paid enough to justify their actions). ADVICE - If booking for the six nations - ask the question DO WE GET USE OF ALL THE FACITILTIES?

Hi there

Thank you very much for your comments concerning your stay with us over the last weekend, I am sorry that you feel your experience was less than satisfactory. You are correct we are perfectly located for Murrayfield and I am delighted you found our rooms and our staff of a high standard. We do find that most of the Trip Advisor audience agree with you on these points.

With regards to your problematic encounters on the Saturday there seems to have been a lack of communication amongst staff and for this I sincerely apologise. You are entirely correct on a rugby weekend you must book your restaurant as ourselves along with most restaurants around Murrayfield Stadium had been fully booked in the week leading up to the matches; please do note that in the evening the restaurant was full with other residents who had booked not a corporate event. We also offer corporate hospitality for the Rugby alongside most of our competing hotels in the area. We do however provide alternative facilities for residents during this time. It is our proceedure on check in to provide guests with all the information they will need regarding these arrangements and if you were missed out on this occasion then I do apologise and will speak to the staff in question to ensure this does not happen again. We have a conservatory area at the rear of the hotel that our staff were providing drinks service to for residents but it seems as though you were missed by this service.

The door staff at the Dunstane House Hotel were specifically told to allow all residents in and although the restaurant was full we had the bar area, the communal hallways (shut off from outside by the doorstaff to keep numbers at a comfortable level) and an outside area too. We were also serving burgers for people should they require a snack. We do attempt to take every precaution to ensure residents are not affected by other bookings we may have but on this occasion we seem to have failed in our attempts in your case for which I can only apologise.

I am sure you are correct that the lady in question on Sunday did all she could to answer your questions, she is supervisor of the City Hotel so I can assure you that management was present at all times during your stay and I would have been more than happy to come and speak to you should you have asked for me as I was on duty also. Perhaps we would have been able to sort out your concerns in that instance.

Once again I do apologise but I assure you this is not the common experience by guests at either of the Dunstane Hotels.

Best Regards
Samantha Wright

“Perfect in everyway”

I recently stayed here with my husband for one night. If you are like me and are obsessed with cleanliness then you will not be let down. The hotel is immaculate, the staff are warm and welcoming, they can't do enough for you. It is also nice to see staff smiling when they greet you. I usually always find something that annoys me in a hotel, but I can honestly say the rooms are warm, stylish and perfect.
