When I arranged my trip to accompany my husband who was on business, I did not realize that the Fringe festival was taking place in Edinburgh. I contacted nearly 3 dozen B&B's (all hotels were full), and James at the Ashgrove house responded in the affirmative that he had a room available for 100 GPB per night. I immediately booked the room for 3 nights. I was informed that I could have a double bed for two nights, but that I would have to change rooms for the last night, and it would have twins. My husband would be elsewhere the 3rd night, so the twin room was no problem for me.
Check-in was at 2;:00 p.m. We arrived at 10:30 a.m. and James was happy to hold our luggage for us until we returned late in the evening.
When we arrived, our luggage had been carried to our room.
The room was much smaller than I had anticipated after reading other reviews, and it looked a bit shabby, but it was clean. The window looked out onto the next door house chimney.
My first shower was a disaster as the shower has an electric operated system that requires one to keep it on med. power. Since there were no instructions, I had switched the power to High as I was soaked to the bone and looking forward to a nice hot shower. This was a big mistake as the water went from ice cold, pumped out of the shower head, then became scalding hot. I gave up on the shower, but my husband was able to figure out how to get a steady flow of comfortably hot water by keeping the power on the unit on Med. The shower the next day worked fine after we figured this out.
Since we had to switch rooms, James told us to keep the luggage in the room and he would make the switch. When we arrived back in the late afternoon, once again, our luggage was waiting for us in the room. We had to walk up a tight spiral staircase to get to the room, and this room was huge with 3 twin beds a desk and an armoire. Pity, since it was just me staying in the room that night. This room had a view out the back of the building. This room (#8) was decorated in a newer decor than the first room had been. It was obvious that the dryer in the bathroom was newer and so was the tile on the walls. Had I just stayed in this room, I would have commented that the rooms were spacious, well lit and nicely decorated. That was certainly not the case with the first room (#4).
There was a large beautifully decorated breakfast room, and a waitress came each morning and asked us what we would like. They make a traditional English breakfast, which we indulged in the first morning. The other two morning I asked if they could make porridge (oatmeal) which they were happy to do, and it was quite tasty. There is yogurt, some fruit and cereals to choose from as well as brown or white toast, tea and coffee.
The Ashgrove house is in a beautiful neighborhood and has an enclosed parking lot in the front. The Airlink runs from the airport and stops just a few houses from the hotel. It cost 3.5 GBP one way. The stop for this hotel is West Coates. Buses run into town from the same spot, but we chose to make the walk every day. It can be challenging as the sidewalks are narrow, and when it rains there are significant puddles, so come prepared.
There is a nice looking pub at the end of the street in West Coates, if you feel like you want something nearby.
This was a tough review for me to make. This is the most expensive B&B that I have stayed at, but I was lucky to get the room. I paid 100 GPB for the night that I was by myself, despite asking if there would be a reduction since my husband was leaving. But I must admit that James was very accommodating, moving our luggage for us, keeping my husband's work computer locked in his office, changing money for me so that I would have exact change to purchase the Airlink ticket back to the airport. (You need exact change).
James and his wife were always smiling and eager to help.
The pros were convenience, clean towels daily, and a nice breakfast. Free internet was also included. There is also a computer for patron use in the living room on the downstairs level. Proprietors who are always friendly and eager to help.
The cons were tight quarters in one room, a limited one hour time slot for breakfast.
The blow dryer was rather weak. Shampoo and body wash was in foil packets. Both showers were only about 2 ft. by 2 ft.
And I thought that the price was high for the quality of the room. But I have not compared other venues in Edinburgh to know the difference.
Room Tip: The top rooms are large and can accommodate families. There are also rooms that share a bath. Ask...
