“The perfect place to stay for a group of friends going to a concert at Murrayfield, we'll definitely be returning”
Myself and four friends were travelling from North Scotland and South West England for a Bon Jovi concert at Murrayfield, so needed an nice apartment close to the Stadium at Murrayfield, close enough to the city centre for shopping/eating etc. and also on a budget. I found the perfect place in James Square Apartments. With very good communication throughout the booking process and run up to our visit from the owner Agnes and her daughter Frederika, I was very happy and confident that we'd chosen the right place.
We arrived on a typically, soggy June afternoon and was met by Agnes' helpful husband (I'm sorry but his name escapes me). We weren't going to take the car but decided last minute it was the easier option, which wasn't a problem as there was a totally secure court yard with allocated parking for each apartment. We were given a key fob for the automatic door for entry. Free parking is hard to come by around Edinburgh!
We were shown to the apartment (No.25) and then around the building which consited of a square block with an indoor heated swimming pool/gym/sauna (which didn't have time to use) and fab roof terrace overlooking the city and Murrayfield Stadium (which we'd have used a lot more if the sun had shown it's face!) We had security keypads to get in to the main building, one on the door to the apartment and roof terrace and there was a swipe card to enter the pool area. So security was good.
In the apartment itself the owners had kindly left basic provisions such as fresh bread, milk, tea, coffee, butter and sugar, which I thought was a really nice personal touch. The apartment was the perfect size for 5 but could accomodate up to 7/8 at a push with a sofa bed/bunk beds. Although there were a few bits of damage here and there ( which I would imagine from the odd stag or hen doo) it was perfectly clean, modern and bright. Comfy leather sofas, books, games, wifi at a small charge and all the ameanities you'd expect in a modern flat. Two twin bedrooms, one of which had zip and link beds should you require a double and there was a further bedroom with a double bunk bed with a single above. One lovely large bathroom with a bath and shower over head and a smaller shower room with a toilet just across the hall.
The owners had left all the towels you could need (swimming included) and freshly made beds.
Restaurants and pubs were a 5-10 minute walk at Haymarket (near the train station), try the Mercat Inn, great food and nice atmosphere, we ate every meal there including a huge breakfast called the Braveheart! There was also a lovely Italian on the Dalry Road (A70) just 2 minutes walk from the apartment, the lunch menu was a bargain and really tasty, can't remember the name of it though.
Murrayfield was 15 minutes walk away if you take the back streets off Dalry road, ideal. We didn't have to move the car from the moment we arrived to the time we departed.
On our day of departure we asked Agnes if we could leave the car with all our luggage in the court yard until 2pm as we weren't in a rush to leave, she said the new arrivals weren't coming until late in the day so it was no problem at all.
All in all our experience was a pleasant and enjoyable one, good times with old friends in nice suroundings. We would certainly be back to stay as the price we paid each was the same price as the city centre Travelodge, but you don't get a personal service and literally, everything you'd need for a few days stay in a Travelodge do you??
Thank you to Agnes and her husband for giving us such a warm welcome and wonderful few days.
All in all I loved the apartment and as the weather was so wet we did spend quite a bit of time there, apart from the concert day itself as thankfully the rain stopped.
