“A place to crash for one night if nothing else is available”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2010

We stayed here for one night and, to be honest, all we needed was a decent night's sleep and a good breakfast, and we got both so no complaints there. The hotel is dated and run-down. Our room was clean, but TV reception was awful and remote didn't work, there was a big, dubious-looking stain on the chair in our room, and our room was BADLY in need of a lick of paint. If the owners would invest in a redecoration program to inject some life into this place, it would make a huge difference as there really is potential to make this into a nice place to stay. As it is, though, 2/5.

“dont judge this book by its cover ;-)”

appearance - looks dire and quite shocking tbh from the outside but once inside it is well decorated and kept. there is free parking available.
reception - polite lady who booked us in, very helpful and hospitable. we missed the evening dinner but offered to give us plates etc if we wanted to get a take out.
decor - landing/stairs smells like a stately home but .. in a nice way! room was clean and had been refurbed with ikea type furniture which was suffice.
room - bed was comfy, window could be opened to let air in unlike some hotels, tv and t&c making facilities were provided. Bathroom looked quite new and i sampled both bath and shower which were good.
breakfast - was a hot buffet along with the usual cereals, toast, juice and fruit. I enjoyed it both days, expecially the hash browns and sausages.
surroundings - the hotel is based about 1.5 mile out from kilmarnock town centre. the centre was dead to say it was a saturday and there was only one decent pub to eat and drink and i think it was at the bottom of the high street where all the shops were called three shoes. we stopped in at glasgow city centre on the way home which is about 20 mile away. well worth it. its shoppers galore and we caught sight of a city march too which was good. Next to the hotel is a tesco, petrol garage, domino's, fish and chip shop and chinese. There is also a rather loud bar and people tend to hang outside of it but we didnt have any bother from anyone.

“Was okay but wa misold with details.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2010

stayed here for 2 nites with my boyfriend, we arrived with a warm welcome and were over an hour ealry before check in time, but were told that we could go up to our room, room was nice and a good size, we have a book in the room with details of the hotel, it stated in this book that there was entertainment & room service in the hotel but when we asked the staff about this he claimed that they dont do room service & dont have any entertainment in the hotel. Theres also no freeview in the room its only channels 1 to 5 with a crap signal. The 1st night we went down to the bar to have our dinner but only had 3 things in stock that was on the menu. Next to the hotel is a chinese (which is really dear) a chippy (which is lovely) and a dominos pizza place with a tesco a pub a bookies & a 24 hour garage right next to the hotel as well. There is a big screen tv in the bar with sky & a pool table also. The breakfast was lovely, it was a buffet breakfast so we just helped ourselfs to cereal and then full english breakfast juice & tea & coffee. Would stay again but need sum updates done for example put freeview in the room & if theres no entertainment & room service then update the book that is in the room. Apart from that had a lovely stay. Staff are always helpful.

“You get what you pay for”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2009

My wife and I booked in for three nights having chosen this hotel primarily for its location and following review of all recent trip advisor reports. The B&B room rate was very cheap and in all fairness part of the attraction. Even if all the previous reviews were correct how could we not be impressed at this price? Particularly on the basis that all we needed was a clean bed, a shower and a light breakfast.

This was certainly a memorable stay with a very basic room (we stayed in one of the recently "refurbished" rooms on the top floor complete with two bedside cabinets and a mirror in the bathroom). As required the room was clean and shower water hot although somewhat lacking in volume.

The bar on the ground floor was busy with locals and guests and had a welcoming atmosphere although selection of food was limited, particularly after 8:30 pm when food orders stopped. Fortunately fish and chips or a pizza were available from adjacent take-aways. Or if you were a little more adventurous you could buy a sandwich or cold meats from Tesco's located within 100 meteres of the hotel.

Breakfast was interesting with a limited self-serve buffet from a room next to the restaurant. If you get up too late be prepared to go hungry. Quality of breakfast was again limited but certainly enough to keep hunger pains at bay for a few hours.

The most endearing and impressive memory of the hotel was the staff who were all extremely friendly and helpful and worked very hard under difficult (and I would suggest embarassing) circumstances. The weather in Kilmarnock was typically wet with continuous rain for the whole period we stayed and I believe for a few days prior to our stay. Consequently the flat roof over the restaurant and toilets serving the bar had given up their main function of keeping all inside dry and warm. To add to the interest and uncertainty of breakfast a trip around the many buckets and dripping ceilings between the restaurant and buffet room was necessary.

Well done to all the staff who were able to maintain a degree of professionalism in difficult circumstances.
