“Old fashioned charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We stayed here between Christmas and New Year so the hotel was quiet but we were made very welcome. We hadn't booked and just turned up. We got the same rate we had been quoted by a Premier Inn down the road and this place was far superior.
Dinner was fantastic (seafood platter,so fresh). The room was clean, comfortable and tasteful without being overly designed. The traditional Scottish breakfast was huge and very tasty served by a lovely, friendly local lady. This hotel would suit anyone who enjoys peace and quiet and old fashioned good taste.

“Caught on the hop?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Four of us booked for lunch in November and things got off to a bad start when it became obvious that another party had been seated where they had intended to seat us. In all it took 3 members of staff to;
a/ confirm that they had a record of our booking,
b/ decide where they were now going to seat us
c/ work out which areas they were going to steal the chairs and place settings from!

Our drink orders were taken but took an age to appear at the table. Another lass took our starter orders and another appeared with a fish knife and fork.
One of our party ordered the soup of the day only for the girl to return to inform him that the soup was not that originally stated, yet he was fine to stay with the new offering.
The rest of us opted for the chicken liver pate with red onion and oatcakes the portions were huge and we had to request more oatcakes as the two tiny ones that came originally was never going to see two growing lads through.
We were still waiting on the soup when a member of staff arrived with fish and chips, hence the fish cutlery! Unfortunately none of our party had ordered their main courses yet. We explained about the soup and she apologised and hurried off. The soup arrived a couple of minutes later but alas no soup spoon had been provided. After a couple of requests we spotted a service cupboard and got one ourselves.

Of our mains, the highlight was the mince and tatties with mealy pudding, tasty with just the right amount of seasoning. The steaks on the other hand were very poor, they didn't look as if they had seen a grill as they were a pallid beige colour, almost as if they had been defrosted in a micro wave and gently heated in a pan - apart from this the accompaniments were absolutely fine so after the soup and cutlery problem I didn't have the heart to complain, instead we decided to give dessert a miss.

Despite the comedy of errors the staff tried their best - I think they had perhaps been caught on the hop by a large group that hadn't booked.
Other reviews score the restaurant highly, I can only assume this was a lunchtime blip and normal service was resumed for dinner.

“Nice hotel, pity about the noisy room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

After an eight hour drive, we were looking forward to a good night's sleep, only to be disappointed. The room was allocated above the boiler room which made the room very hot. The central heating system made gurgling noises all night and there seemed to be air in the pipes which made the radiators noisy. We tried opening the windows for a bit of air but the condensing pipe was gushing steam across the window. This has to be one of the worst rooms we have ever had.
The food in the restaurant was fine, as was the breakfast served by pleasant, helpful staff.
We had a long drive home and were very pleased to get back to our own bed.
Incidentally, we did ask for a quiet room but were told there werent any due to it being Burns Night.

Room Tip: preferably away from the central heating system

“Good, unpretentious hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I recently stayed here for 10 nights so got to know the hotel quite well :-) It's a little bit dated now but that's not such a bad thing - gives it some character. Everywhere I went was very clean and well presented. All the staff I interacted with were personable and helpful - and a special mention here for Georgina in the restaurant.
The food was by and large OK but I feel (like gordonstmungos) that this is an area that could be improved on. Some things were excellent but others were far from it. After a particularly rough steak I didn't eat there in the evening again. Breakfast was pretty good but I was surprised to see tinned rather than a fresh fruit salad most mornings. There were usually apples and bananas to compensate though.
My room was comfortable - nothing to write home about nor complain about either.
Just about the only thing I had to complain about was the terrible musak. It's bad enough anyway but when I'd heard the same cd for a week, I cracked!
Not much more to say - It was fine for me and I'll certainly stay when in Dundee again - providing they change that CD!

“Good Taditional Scottish Food”

We dined here with friends and we had a fantastic meal. If you book the restuarant early you can choose from the early bird menu which has some good traditional starters, main courses and sweets.Only one complaint that we had was the cheap frozen fries.Surely a place of this stature should have hand cut fries.Come on chef try a wee bit harder.
