“Great staff and location, awful guests and noise”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2010

I stayed here for two nights, and the staff were great. Some of the other guests, however, were inconsiderate, loud, and I think even smoking inside. One of the nights, a group were running up and down the stairs laughing, screaming, and practically throwing suitcases around! I'd understand a little more if it was a weekend (still unacceptable), but jeez. I've stayed in some pretty nice hostels, and the ones I visit again and again are never like this. It's not a scientific assessment or anything, but I'd reckon this is not out of the ordinary seeing as nobody came up to quiet them down.

So aside from the troublemakers, this is a great place. It's exceptionally clean and in a perfect location for access to public transit and the city centre. My one complaint about the room is that the bed is so high that I literally have to climb into it. Once in, it's pretty cosy being tucked in the corner.

“Nice little hostel in EXCELLENT location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2010

I know Dundee very well having lived there for three years while at university. My boyfriend and I stayed at the hostel for two nights during a weekend visit for an old friends birthday. I have stayed in plenty of hostels before but my boyfriend hadnt and didnt fancy the idea of sharing a room so we booked a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom and this was much cheaper than booking something similar in a hotel. The main reason for choosing the hostel was because it looked ok on the website and because of the location.

The location really could not be better. It is about a minutes walk from the Overgate shopping centre and less than five minutes from Wellgate shopping centre. It is opposite Caird Hall. Less than a five minute walk from the bus station, a two minute walk from the nearest Tesco Express, and a ten minute walk from the train station. It is a ten minute walk from the Dundee University Student Union. There really could not be a better location particularly if you want to enjoy the night life. The student union is not far away and all other bars are less than a ten minute walk away from the hostel - some as close as a two minute walk. The entrance to the hostel is on a pedestrianised shopping street. There is plenty of nearby parking, we parked behind the Overgate and it wasn't very expensive.

Inside the hostel is nice. There are lots of windy stair cases, that is the only thing, so if you cant manage that then you should perhaps find another place to stay. I didnt have a problem with it though I did feel a bit dizzy when climbing the stairs after a big night out. There is lots of character to the hostel. Our room was great. It was right at the top of the building (which does mean more stairs than most) which meant it felt far away from the dormitories and common rooms so it was quiet. The room was well decorated albeit a little plain and was spotlessly clean. There wasn't much difference between this room and a small hotel room aside from the lack of mini bar and room service. It was a nice room with a good view and the bed was very comfy. It was a proper double rather than two singles pushed together.

The hostel has loads of amenities. Nice TV room, very nice kitchen that has clearly had a bit of money spent on it, it's large and modern and clean. There is internet access on a number of computers but I didnt use it. The staff are friendly and can provide city maps at reception. I would highly recommend this hostel to anybody. It didnt cost much to upgrade from a dorm room to a private room either but it is cheaper than the local hotels and travel inns and also has a better location than most local hotels I looked at. I've uploaded lots of pics so have a look.

“Good value place to stay in central Dundee”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2009

We traveled with a group of students to visit the University of Dundee and had booked an entire section of the 2nd floor (an 8-bedroom dorm, 2 double en suites and 2 double standard rooms). Everyone enjoyed the stay: the place has character, is clean, comfortable, well located (in the center, pedestrian part of town; 10mn walk from the university) and friendly. Only inconvenience: internet connection extremely slow and maybe a bit noisy during the night but that comes with being centrally located!

“Excellent location, ok value, noisey”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2009

Stayed at the Hostel for 3 nights and was relatively happy with the accomodation. Check in was okay (only issue was the card machine was broken, hence had to find cash machine and pay by cash). I stayed in the double room with onsuite, which was located right at the top floor of the hotel so had to climb a number of stairs to get there. the room was very clean and tidy and of a descent size, the only furniture there was the bed with sheets and a chest of drawers. The bathroom was slightly compact, with a shower (no bath). Towels were available from reception for a cost of a pound.
There is internet available at the hostel at a price, but when I stayed both computers were broken. There was a TV room and dining area for the guests (Didn't use personally) and a kitchen with all the basic amenities.
The Hostel had excellent location right in the centre of dundee. The only real problem with the hostel was that it was quite noisey. noise from the clubbers and early morning shoppers could be heard in the room.
Okay Hostel but personally I think there are better Hotels available near by with the addition of wi-fi and a TV costing slightly extra.

“So much more than a backpackers hostel! Great for an overnight business stay”

This Hostel is a real find. Having to stay over in Dundee on business, I was dreading a lonely bland budget hotel room. I wasn't sure if a backpackers was for me (I'm 60!) but liked the high street location. I have seldom been in such characterful accommodation. the staff were welcoming, my room was amazing, little sitting rooms to chill out in and other visitors to chat with, plus easy internet access so that I could do my report. This hostel is worth coming to Dundee for!
