“One of the best ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2011

Never stayed in the hotel so can't comment on the quality or otherwise, but as far as eating their is concerned, quite simply this is one of the best pubs for food I have ever dined in.

The quality is superb, the prices very reasonable given the quality and attention to detail is wonderful. The owner, Dave - a South African I believe - has instilled a sense of customer service without stuffiness that is a breath of fresh air. All the food is locally sourced and traceable, indeed you can see on table menus where all the products come from. The dishes are varied and of a consistently high standard, and if you think having a steak pie is slumming it try either the "Duke" or the "Earl" at the Buccleuch.

Fantastic place - can't praise highly enough.

“Good food however marred by poor service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

After a recent visit to the Buccleuch Arms I feel it necessary to express my dissappointment at the lack customer service provided.

I booked a table for myself and friends for an evening meal. The Bar area and restaurant were very quiet and we were shown to our table.
No one offered to take our coats, one of my fellow guests found the coat stand and hung them herself.
Evening menus were offered and a drinks order taken. However the all day menu and wine list had to be requested.
Food and wine were ordered and very rustic bread arrived promptly. Starters followed which we all enjoyed, although no one enquired if we were enjoying our starters and drinks were not replenished.
Main dishes were cooked well and tasty but during the meal staff were absent throughout. Should we have required any additional services we would have been at a loss to have found a staff member.
We continued to finish with desserts and cheese which again we could not fault. When we required the bill we had to find a staff member who promptly gave us the bill but did not return to finalise the account so I was left with no option but to leave the cash on the table.

My guests and I left the Buccleuch Arms without seeing anyone or being wished goodnight.
As I have explained the food we thoroughly enjoyed but found the evening was over shadowed buy the lack of care and attention by the waiting staff.
I would find it difficult to reccomend due to these factors.

“Very hospitable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

We were on a club motorcycle tour of Scotland and stayed at the Buccleugh on the way back south. Having visited before we knew the way into the secure yard behind the hotel where we were met by the owner who directed us all into the fancy steel sheds he's had installed to house guest's motorcycles. Some of us also took the chance to use the power-washer on what were some very grubby motorcycles after a week on the road.
Rooms were dated but clean and perfectly adequate. The food was excellent and better than on our previous visit in 2009. All the staff were cheery and welcoming. The decor is old-fashioned but not twee or self-concious. It all felt very welcoming.
Overall an excellent experience which I would happily repeat. Only the rooms hold it back a little.

“Great for motorbikers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

I stayed here for 1 night in July this year with 3 of my mates, which was our stopover on a 2 day motorbike trip, on 4 bikes. If you are travelling up to the area on motorbike, this is a great place to stay. On our arrival, the rear garden of the hotel was opened up for us to drive our bikes straight into and we were each allocated one of 12 metal bike garages to which we were able to keep the key and the bikes were kept secure in overnight. There was loads of storage in the garages for kit that you didn't want to take up to the room ie helmets etc. There were chamois cloths to wipe the bikes down and the inside of the garages were immaculately clean. Once the bikes were inside them they got quite warm as well so it was perfect for hanging up our wet jackets (hangers and hooks also supplied!). Afterwards out wet gloves were also taken off us by our host and returned to us bone dry the next morning. Once we had checked in we were shown to our rooms. This is a very old building but despite that the rooms (we had 2 twins) were warm and comfortable and the en-suite shower was spacious and the shower was wonderful, especially after a hard day's riding. We ate dinner in the hotel restaurant and despite being a little on the pricey side (everywhere in this area is) there was a varied selection and the quality was excellent. Breakfast the next morning again had a varied selection but we felt that ours had been made in a hurry- the food coming to other tables looked better prepared. Despite that it tasted good and set us up nicely for a good onward ride. From a biker's point of view this is a great place, the fact that the owners are bikers themselves really shows.
