“Like visiting friends not a business”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 February 2011

On our arrival we were greeted as if old friends returning - no formality but genuine warmth. Shown round the beautifully appointed rooms in the house and then taken to our room which was superb with views over the rooftops to the hills beyond.
We were then invited to the lounge for afternoon tea and cake beside the cosy fire. It was indeed a most welcome after the journey.
Dinner was provided in the B&B, which is not common these days, and was superb and worth every penny of the £26. Since there is no licence to sell alcohol, we were encouraged to bring wine to have with the meal, if we so wished.
After a most comfortable sleep, breakfast was another culinary treat, with home-made bread on the menu. Nothing was a problem and we were again encouraged to ask for more.
In our alas to short a stay, it seemed to us that the couple run the B&B along the lines of welcoming and entertaining friends in their home.
This was our first stay at Gladstone House but hopefully it won't be our last.

“Lovely B&B - highly recommended”

Beautiful rooms and kind, welcoming hosts. A lovely retreat in the peaceful little town of Kirkcudbright, just a few minutes walk from the harbour and restaurants, and around the corner from the Tollbooth Arts Centre and nearby craft shops. Gordon's breakfasts are jovial and memorable affairs !

“Awesome B and B with great food and welcome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2010

We stayed at Gladstone house in October and were lucky enough to hit Kirkudbright at a quiet time but with fantastic weather. Gladstone house is a fantastic B and B with everything to the highest standards. The rooms, the giant guest lounge, the food and especially the service. We felt more like house guests than paying guests.

“Just delightful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 June 2008

From arrival to departure , the hospitality was excellent. As soon as we walked in, tea was offered--and cake too. in the elegant and comfortable residents lounge. After settling in , Gordon and Hillary told us about local attractions , and where to buy wine if we wanted it with dinner.
Dinner was good-- excellent quality food and mainly local produce . Breakfast was the tops -- beautifully cooked, haggis and black pudding etc as well as standard items . Alas we were only there for one night but booked in again for our return from the Highlands .

“Love this place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 May 2008

My boyfriend and I have just returned from our third visit to Gladstone House which continues to provide everything that a visitor to Kirkcudbright could want, so much so that I have to keep going back to remind myself how much I like it!

The guest house is set within the walls of a beautiful and very elegant Georgian House (just the kind I would like to own one day) It has a lovely, airy first floor drawing room with lots of books about the local area, fresh flowers and lots of delicious home-made cakes to munch on. The rooms (we have stayed in 2 different ones) are extremely comfortable, light and immaculately tidy and clean!

Gordon and Hilary, who are such welcoming and friendly hosts, source lots of their produce straight from the garden (which is also a great sun trap!) bake their own bread and will cook you dinner if you so desire – definitely would rival any restaurant (all you have to do is ask in advance.) We took our own drink too which also keeps the cost down. Breakfast is also great -lots of healthly fruit and yogurt or you can opt for a more calorific fry up!

I love coming to Gladstone House – it’s like a home from home…except you don’t need to do any of the cleaning! It’s always recommended in all the guides and, in my opinion, thoroughly deserves it’s premier rating.

I could write about this place all day but you have to experience it to understand my ramblings. If you’re going to Kirkcudbright, this is my top tip for a happy and relaxed stay. Enjoy!
