“Weekend planning trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We have just stayed at this hotel for the weekend as we are planning our wedding in Gretna Green. We got an excellent deal on Dinner, bed and breakfast and were able to have a really good look at the hotel as a potential wedding venue. There was actually a wedding there on Saturday so it gave us the perfect opportunity to see 'first hand' how smoothly things appeared to go ( All the very best to the bride and groom!! ). The hotel itself is in need of a little TLC but it's a very old, traditional kind of hotel and has great character. There is a lovely open fire in the reception area to welcome guests in from the cold and the reception staff are very helpful and efficient. It's a shame there is not an open fire in the lounge area as it was quite cold at times. The bar staff are friendly enough but not very warm ( bit like the bar area!! ) if you know what I mean. There were several occasions when guests were waiting at the bar to be served and no staff could be found. This is the only reason I scored the hotel down on the area of 'service'. Fortunately the rooms which serve as function suites have their own bar so that should not present a problem for a wedding party.
The wedding advisors were very helpful, as you would expect, and gave us plenty of useful information upon which to base our decision. We had a look round the original blacksmith's shop and this is a perfect venue for a wedding.
The food in the Anvil Restaurant was excellent, with a good choice of starters, main and dessert from the fixed menu. We had 4 different starters and main courses over the two nights and every one of the meals was perfect in both taste and amount.
The price of drinks is reasonable for a hotel and the variety is more than adequate. One thing which does frustrate me, and it's an issue nearly everywhere you go, is the cost of mixers, 40p for soda water or a tiny splash of lime juice does seem to be exorbitant!
The grounds of the hotel are lovely and there are plenty of good photo opportunities.
We did consider other options and looked at other venues, but for sheer charm and tradition, the Gretna Hall just about won the day!
Overall a really useful and enjoyable stay.... We will definitely be booking our wedding there!!

“Good Break”

Stayed here between 26th and 28th of January, as we got it for a bargain price for bed and breakfast. On arrival, the hotel looked nice enough, has some nice grounds where people can take their wedding photographs. Reception staff were nice enough, and the interior was nice. Stayed on the ground floor, room was basic but nice enough. Bathroom could do with a bit updating. Only problem we had with the room though, was that the bed was a tad small, so much so that our feet nearly hung off the end.

We never ate at the hotel for dinner. We did have breakfast though, which was a buffet style, and was good. The hotel has the little blacksmiths cottage and gift shop, meant to cost a £1 to get in, but we got in for free, and it was nice, even saw a wedding in the process. Overall great little trip and seen a lot of things in the surrounding area.

we went to this hotel for a burns night supper arrived on the friday things went fine till we we went for dinner i orderd the salmon .they had none,my second choice was t bone steak.they had none.i settled for beef borginion ,bad choice tasted like fray bentos to me.
sat night burns supper looking forward to this// we got turned away from the restaurant they didnt have a prebooked table for us #4 15 minuets later the bagpipes started we were still in the bar waiting to be seated disgracefull negative restaurant organisation.
this hotel is has undergone some refurbishment but on a very tight budget we had a new sink and bath in our room which was let down by bad snaggin the dado rail is 4" skirtin board. the bed was to short for me im only 5/10 and my feet were sticking out the bottom i could go on but wont.
we wont be staying at this hotel again.

Room Tip: got no tips for this hotel im afraid it was a bad stay

We went back to this hotel for the first time since we got married there 14 years ago. The exterior of the hotel and the blacksmiths shop hasn't changed greatly in that time but it has to be said the internal decor from the bar/ restaurant to the bedrooms have greatly improved.
The menu wasn't that varied but the quality of food on offer was excellent.
The only negative we found that was there was no wheelchair stairlift to the restaurant and bar and that my wife had to walk up some stairs to get to it.
All in all though we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay and would certainly visit again.

“very tired in need of some tlc”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

we booked a late hotel on the spur of the moment. we arrived late staff very helpful but when we reached the room it was in need of some tlc, no overhead light in the bathroom just the small mirror over the sink we did advise staff but nothing was done, clean beds but the curtains were hanging off the rail and the bedroom chair was threadbare ! if I had paid full asking price I would have asked for my money back ! come on this is the most romantic place in the UK and loads of couples get married here.
