“Average experience, but restaurant service excellent”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

I recently stayed a night here prior to an event in Carlisle. The hotel itself is well located and easy to find from the motorway. Check-in was swift and courteous. The bedroom was rather small and dated, but clean; the bathroom was modern and also spotless. Food in the bar/restaurant that evening was fine (if not exceptional); service was extremely friendly and couldn't be faulted. A problem with heating in the room (the radiator was not working on our arrival) was swiftly dealt with when reported, but for some reason the radiator shut down again during the evening (fortunately heavy bed linen kept us warm that night). We had to be away swiftly the next morning, so didn't have time to get stressed by a chilly awakening, or with the fact that the shower failed to drain properly and so the tray filled alarmingly. On reporting these issues on our way out we were offered an apology and assured that they would be dealt with. Overall, then, a rather average experience for the money, even at off-season prices.

Room Tip: Ask for a room within the main building. Those located across the carpark were rather cramped and a...

“Perfect wedding and great staff!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

We booked the Solway Lodge for our wedding at the beginning of August 2011. From the beginning, Iain was fantastic - dealing with our booking and answering any questions we had (we booked approx 18 months in advance). Our party was quite small (9 staying here and 10 in different hotels) but he went out of his way to help.

We called into the Solway 3 months before the wedding - and again we were put at ease that everything was organised and prepared for August. When we arrived the day before the wedding, we didn't have to wait long at all to check in - even though our party were arriving at different times. The rooms were lovely - clean, bright, modern and very well decorated. The en suites were a good size as well (as in some hotels the bathroom isn't always full sized, unlike here). Some of the party were in the motel rooms at the side of the hotel - although after visiting them there, I was surprised at the size of them (we'd booked singles but all of the singles were actually good sized twins). All our party commented on how quiet it was in the Solway which also meant that a good nights' sleep was had by everyone as well.

Staff were always available and on hand to go through the final plans for the wedding the following day - so by the time the wedding arrived, we totally trusted them with the planning.

As we had a small wedding party (there was another one in the same day) we opted for the reception in the restaurant, which was closed to the public whilst our reception was on. The three course meal that we had was great - plenty of food, top quality and extremely reasonable (as usually venues increase the prices for weddings unlike here).

We were told that we could have the hotel bar in the evening - and even though we shared this with the other party and public, we had a great time. Staff let us have our own CD's and we had a late bar. Bar prices are the going rate - not hiked up hotel prices like most places.

The breakfast the next morning was good - and even up to checking out, Iain and the staff were still friendly, attentive and professional.

All our wedding party passed comment on how good the hotel was and especially the food and wine at the reception. We would definitely stay there again if we were to be in the area. A great hotel that helped to make our wedding perfect!!!!

my fiance ,myself and the family stayed here when we went to gretna to get married. wonderfull staff, great meals every day ,lovely atmosphere.only down side was ,as a group and with our 3 children they were shoved outside in the motel bit ,would have felt a little better if the kids were in the main hotel with us,hotel wasnt busy as we asked for an upgrade for my parents and they got a brighter room than the honeymoon suite lol,our room tho lovely was very dark.[romantic yes,but difficult to see] nice jaccuzi bathroom tho
ps stayed here back in nov 2008 but slide down bar only goes back to dec 10 lol x

Room Tip: all rooms we saw were clean and quiet, ask for room in hotel if you dont fancy a jaunt across the car...

“Lovely”

I recently stayed 2 nights at the hotel for a family wedding. The rooms were each individually decorated very beautifully. There was a large ensuite bathroom also of a high standard. The room has a plasma tv and tea making facilities. The hotel was of good value for money. I only ate breakfast at the hotel but I was able to enjoy a full English breakfast each day which was cooked to a high standard. I saw the hotel my family were staying in down the road and there's was dire compared to mine especially considering they were staying in honeymoon suite. My family wished they were staying in my hotel. I will definately stay at the splash lodge again. It is a small but very deceiving hotel ( in a good way) .
