“A 5 day winter break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2011

This is a wonderful Hotel which stands in the middle of a large estate with deer to be seen around the hotel and only Red Squirels are allowed as residents. The rooms are very large and comfortabley furnished. The 18 hole golf course for the exclusive use by residents is in great order. The highlight of the stay was the restaurant, with a fantastic menu which is changed every day. It is a must for a special treat .

Room Tip: the largest room are inthe Forrest Wing at the rear facing the garden and 18th green rooms 113 114...

“One Up from Nursing Home”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

In my view this hotel is one up from a Nursing Home, the rooms we stayed in were tired, furninhings were worn and in some cases damaged, rather reminded me of enetering an aged Aunts home, with a rocking chair and an old style wollen blankets on the bed.
The restauant food and service were reasonable but did not warrant the dress code.
We are in our mid 40's and were with our 4 children aged between 8 and 18 and felt uncomfortable as the majority of the guests were elderly.
On the positive side the grounds are quite beautiful and well kept although the tennis court was so neglected it was unplayable.
The pool was very quiet and ample in size however the jacuzzi was cracked and unsightly. The fitness room was a small annex within the pool and again very poor.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, it is faded grandure and not worth the money.
It was so bad it was laughable,

“A lovely, friendly hotel. Everyone was so helpful.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2011

Booked this hotel after reading about it on Tripadvisor. Went with the majority of the reviews and was not dissapointed. Everybody was so helpful, from Kelly in reception who recommended our room right up to the manager who remembered our names, not forgetting one of the waiters who recalled how my wife liked her coffee.
Stayed in room 71 which turned out to be a suite with a view of the Ist tee on the golf course. What a beautiful room, it had everything we needed.
Stayed dinner, bed and breakfast. Meals were cooked to perfection.
Couldn't find any tired chairs or carpets but didn't go in any other rooms.
Yes the average age was on the high side but at least they are quiet and we met some great charecters.
The golf course was a bit on the wet side but it had rained a lot...the comment about taking lots of golf balls is correct.
On the whole if you fancy a quiet holiday with some golf and nice walks accompanied by good food, this is for you.

Room Tip: Room 71 is a suite. Newly renovated.

“Excellent venue for a few relaxing days whether or not you are a golfer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2011

This hotel stands gloriously in its own grounds surrounded by a remarkably good golf course, dense woods and well regarded gardens. The original house boasts the best bedrooms, as nice as are available anywhere, perfect for couples desiring a few days away from it all, perhaps looking forward to exploring Dumfries and Galloway's fascinating environment. However, the rooms in the Forest Wing are also spacious and well appointed ideally suited to golfers who enjoy good food and a few liquid refreshments, of which there is a varied and interesting selection, after cooling off in the well appointed leisure area and swimming pool. Breakfast is typical Scottish breakfast with one difference from some hotels, it is cooked personally for you. Dinner affords a varied menu, different each evening, and also comprises fresh food cooked to you liking. Each dish is presented as the chef has prepared it but a selection of other vegetables is also available to complement this. Interestingly, each diner can select as many, or as few, biscuits from a biscuit box if he, or she, orders biscuits and cheese ensuring that this popular choice suits every taste and appetite. We have been regularly for over twenty years and hope to return often in the future. We know that we will continue to enjoy a warm welcome and first class service throughout the hotel although we accept the one limitation, it is perhaps not the most exciting venue for our young grandchildren.

Room Tip: Ask for a room, with twin bathroom facilities and also a lounge area, on the second floor of the ori...

“Comfortable, relaxing, excellent service and delicious food”

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our week's stay. The views from the hotel over its golf course and the lake are stunning.
We found all the staff very helpful - nothing was too much trouble for them.
Our room was traditionally decorated but it was in keeping with the age and theme of the hotel. It was kept spotlessly clean and smelled fresh.
The swimming pool was large, well maintained but never crowded. There was a jacuzzi. The gym, although small, was under-utilised but it did have "one of each of the machines" that most keen keep fit enthusiasts would use.
Whilst the majority of guests were in the "autumn" of their years there were also several families staying with children.
The "jacket and tie" dress code for dinner did seem a bit formal at first but it did have the advantage of making dinner a special occasion as everyone looked very smart. The food cooked by Jamie the chef was delicious - some of the best we have eaten anywhere- and well worth dressing up for!
