“Repeat visitor... northern monkey.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2011

If your a keen mountain biker and intend to ride trail centres such as Kirroughtree, Dalbeatie, and Ae Marthrown is a brilliant base.
The place is run by good people who make you feel welcome without being a hinderance to your daily activities.

Kitchen facilities have been recently improved and Pam and Mike continue to provide a pleasant environment for all age groups.
It's a great feeling waking up on your first morning and going for a ride in the forest before everyone is up... a complete antidote to the 9-5!

The road...

The forest road is crap if your in your low car with silly big wheels however, most sturdy, sensible vehicles have suspension designed to cope with a few pot holes..
however it is a working forest, and therefore the lorries do have an impact on the road.

Anywhere that does'nt mind a group of smelly mountain bikers and at the same time provides a good service to families with young kids can't be bad.

Room Tip: book in advance.. and if you have special requirements state them.

JUST GO......yes it wont mater later ,
we booked this site after 1 of my neighbours seen it on COOL CAMPING website
it is cool ,home made jacuzzi, sauna, BBQ,house/bunkhouses /free brew cafe stroke dinning room chill out library, all within 2 mins stroll .
arrive in stressed walk out chilled, wot a grate place to leave all your work thoughts behind
points to consider
its not the Hilton.its camping but in a bunkhouse (the log fires are the bomb)
BBQ ,you need your own charcoal /fire lighters
take sleeping bags, showers are in your room with lots of hot water(generator)no late electric due to noise from oil generator (turned of at 11 ish) torch ! we spent most of our time around the BBQ and volley ball /jacuzzi area ,but there's lots of walking paths that take you for miles. there's bike hire 5mins walk away ,open 7 days ,hotel 10 mins walk , Dumfries is 10 mins drive.
lots of mountain bikers about at weekends ,they cater for that sort of thing here.not that hard to find.not that rough if you normally camp(great not having to pitch a tent in the pouring rain)
warm welcome by owners (they will sometimes cook a breakie)

“Idyllic setting in Mabie forest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2011

We have just returned from a two night stay in the Yurt at Marthrown. The Yurt has all you will need to cook, relax and get a good nights sleep. The site is set among the trees of Mabie forest, a real get away from reality. The site is well equiped with a choice of conventional toilet and shower or compost loo and outdoor shower. The compost loo really is worth a try. Answering a call of nature while looking out across the forest is like nothing you'll have experienced before. We spent a very relaxing night enjoying the hot tub and sauna and chatting with some folks who were staying on the camp site. Both Mike and Pam were excellent hosts and we can't wait to return.

“Brilliant place...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 May 2011

Having just returned from Marthrown of Mabie, I feel I have to write and let everyone know what a fabulous place it is! We were a large group of 25 friends and had booked the entire bunkhouse area for the weekend. We were greeted very warmly by Pam and Mike, the owners, and they could not have been more friendly and helpful during our visit. The self catering facilities lacked nothing with free tea and coffee facilities as an added bonus. We all enjoyed a Friday night meal together in the big dining room with the woodburning stove on, keeping us all snug. After a days hill walking on the Saturday, there was nothing better than a soak in the open air hot tub followed by a huge feast of hog roast (Annabel)and all the trimmings. This was expertly cooked by both Mike and Pam. Another group were staying in the round house at the same time and they invited us up in the evening when it was all lit up by candles and again, a lovely log fire..totally magical.
A HUGE thank you to Pam, Mike and their son for working like Trojans all weekend to give us all such a fantastic time. We will return...

We had a great time here. Pine needles will be found in the tent for years to come!
