“A wonderful country retreat”

An ideal 'break from it all' in a quiet setting with excellent food, a warm, but discreet welcome and attentive, but not pushy staff. We arrived on a wet day to find afternoon tea provided then a wonderful dinner followed the next mprning by a good hearty Scottish breakfast all cooked by the owner/chef.

The grounds are worth wandering round and there is a variety of things to do in the area. We easily occupied our 2 night break.

This is a place we have returned to several times and will do so again.

Room Tip: It is worth upgrading, but all the rooms are pleasant and there is a downstairs room for those unabl...

“Peferection, service, charm & hospitality at it's very very best”

We have visited Cavens numerous times over the past few years & decided to hire the entire hotel for 3 days for our wedding.

From the outset Angus & his team helped us plan our big day in meticulous detail, and it was an excellent excuse to enjoy a couple of impromptu stays at Cavens leading up to the big event!

Our wedding weekend went absolutely perfectly and Angus's team ensured everything happened according to plan. The highlight of the weekend was the reception & wedding dinner. The food was brilliant - starters were a selection of locally smoked produce, the main course  locally sourced legs of lamb, carved in front of the guests according to their preferences. Pudding was a unequalled summer fruit pudding, which Angus's wife, Jane, spent a long time preparing!

All of the rooms (reception rooms & bedrooms) were spotlessly clean when we arrived & they were all completely cleaned for each night our guests & us were there.

Everything was arranged by Angus & his team, from flowers to the piper, who piped his heart out for 4 hours, some of the time in the pouring rain!

There was not a single complaint about any aspect of our weekend from my wife & I or any of our guests. We could not have asked for a more perfect weekend. If you are looking for a superb wedding venue, that can be tailored to your every need, then look no further than Cavens. It was also very very reasonably priced & we would have had to pay a significant amount more to hold such a venue elsewhere in the UK.

Were the any negative points from the weekend? Well, the weather wasn't brilliant but I'm sure Angus would have changed that for us if he could! A few glasses of the superb wine soon took our minds off it anyway!

From my wife & I and all of our guests a HUGE thanks to Angus & his fabulous, friendly team.

“Beautiful setting and excellent food”

We have just returned after a two night's stay at Cavens. We love this area and were
delighted to find this quiet retreat with just the right amount of faded grandeur,a step
into another world. But our most pleasant and delightful surprise was the evening
meals prepared by the owner; local ingredients cooked beautifully and with a flair
which was a cut above the usual formulas for this kind of food

“Disappointing.......”

Cavens looked great on the website. The stting rooms were lovely but the lilies in a vase were dead. Our room was very nice (we had paid for the best) but the worn and grubby valance on the bed spoilt the effect. the chair at the dressing table was covered in hairs - I brushed them onto the floor - they were still there the next day as was the grass on the carpet that we had brought in on our shoes. Dinner was disappointing - not much choice - the first night, the two starters and one of the mains was salmon. the food itself was pleasant but not "restaurant" standard - more like home cooking. The breakfast was excellent but for the fact that the tablecloth was stained from the night before and crumbs remained from the dinner bread. Yes, we could have made a fuss about the shortcomings at the time but we did not wish to marr our all too short 48 hour break with confrontation. I am not sure out host would have been very sympathetic as I am not convinced that he liked sharing his "home" with strangers!! What a pity.

Firstly would like to thank you for both visiting Cavens and taking the time to write a review. It is our intention to provide all guests, regardless of what room they have, the most relaxing and welcoming stay in a genuine Country House with the high standards to match. We would therefore like to apologise for the oversight on the valance and hairs you found in the room, this is not our usual standard as our other reviews will testify, although the valance on inspection was considered at the time to be clean and of a high standard and we were slightly perplexed at that particular comment. We would also hope that in the unusual instance that someone had a housekeeping complaint they would bring it to our attention immediately and give us the opportunity rectify the matter. The flowers had already been noticed and seen to the next day.

Dinner only ever has limited menu choices as all produce used is completely seasonal, locally sourced and of the best quality. Due to the fact we never compromise on the quality and freshness we normally only ever offer 2 or 3 choices for any one course, a fact we publicise both on our web-site and our promotional material by way of the sample menus. The fact the Salmon featured heavily at the time of your stay was because it was very much in season, although Angus, the owner, is always happy to see if there is an alternative he could cook up for any guest that cannot find something they like. Also the whole ethos of the restaurant is Fine Food cooked well, Angus is not a Master Chef but he has trained to a high standard and makes a particular point of not overcooking or over-presenting the main ingredients, allowing the freshest and finest of flavours to come to the fore of every dish.

The tablecloth, which is of the highest quality starched linen, is normally left on your table for use the next morning as is tradition with almost every Country House. There should not have been any crumbs sitting on your table for breakfast, so we do apologise for failing to notice this.

We are sorry if these details spoiled your stay in anyway, but throughout your stay and up to the time of your check-out you had only given Cavens the impression that you were thoroughly enjoying your stay so unfortunately we were not given the chance to rectify or improve things at the time to allow you to enjoy Cavens experience to its fullest. We ask guests in general that if there is anything that should be attended to and we appear unaware of the situation please bring it to the attention of a member of staff and we will do our utmost to rectify things to your satisfaction whenever feasible and as soon as possible.

“Basil Fawlty would be proud of the owners performance!”

Two couples, four business people who happen to be friends, decided to try Cavens Country House Hotel for a Birthday celebration. We booked a table via telephone. We arrived at the beginning of the driveway up to the hotel to see an "A" board advertising Sea Bass, Salmon and Galloway Beef. Our appetites and anticipation were suitably wetted. We drove up to the Hotel which is set amidst beautiful scenery. We entered but there was no one in reception. We wandered through some corridors and eventually found the housekeeper. We decided to sit on the terrace for drinks. The gardens were excellent but it appeared that the hotel itself was in urgent need of redecoration both inside and out. The housekeeper was unaware which beers she could offer. Once the drinks did arrive the waitress attempted to pour a bottle of sparkling water into a glass of wine instead of the soda water requested. When this was pointed out the reasoning given was they had no soda water. We perused the set menu, 4 courses set price £35. There were only two choices of main course, Fish or Lamb, none of the choices advertised on the "A" board. We enquired if there was an A La Carte menu to be told that the set menu was the only choice. The owner arrived to speak to us and spent 10 minutes trying to justify why there was limited choice because he couldnt afford to throw away unused food, his was the only establishment within an hours drive that served "fresh" food. One couple enquired about the sea bass and the owner offered to serve last nights "fresh" sea bass! The owner left us to deliberate having succeeded in meerly detering us instead of attracting us to eat his food. We advised the housekeeper that we would pay for our drinks and would be leaving. The owner reappeared, eyes bulging and started ranting at us. he said he would charge us £50 to leave! He threatened to call the police to us if we didnt pay. All this was carried out in front of the few, approximately 5 or 6 guests he did have. We paid for the drinks £20 and went to the car ready to leave. The owner came out to the car park and said "off you go you look like you prefer frozen chips anyway"! When asked what his problem was he replied "tossers like you tonight". If it hadnt been so farcical the situation had the potential to become out of hand. As mentioned the owner must model himself on Basil Fawlty. On a more serious note we felt there was a real possibility that the Owner may have resorted to physical violence. Our suggestion steer well clear!

Cavens would like to thank you for the opportunity to reply to your comments, which in one or two instances is considered fair. The A-board did not, and still does not advertise what is on offer any particular night. It is there to indicate the types of food often served at Cavens, ie, locally sourced, high quality produce. We can understand why that may cause some confusion or even disappointment and prior to this review we had already taken the decision to review all of our signage including the contents of the A-board and the Hotel entrance. However the wandering through corridors equated to walking along one dog-leg hallway that lead to the sitting room. We apologies if you found this difficult to navigate, although on quieter nights we will often greet guests at the entrance, keen to welcome all visitors. The ‘housekeeper’ you refer to was in fact our Hotel Manager.

The Decor may not be to everyone’s taste but it is decorated in sympathy with the period of the house itself, a Country Estate House, and is of the highest quality throughout as most other guest have frequently commented.

The Hotel Manager was unsure of what beers were available as we had ran out of one of the locally brewed beers that is normally kept in stock that particular night and she had to check what stocks were left. Due to the nature of the restaurant we do not carry a large stock of lager, neither do we carry a large variety. Our emphasis is on the extensive wine cellar which is particularly well stocked with some of the best wines to complement the food. We do not stock soda water due to the low demand, and if this was not mentioned at the time of ordering a white wine spritzer then this was an oversight and we apologies for this point.

It is also for this reason we do not offer an a la carte, Angus, the owner will however endeavour to rustle up a tasty alternative if what is on the menu does not suit. The whole ethos of the restaurant is the finest seasonal, locally sourced, fresh produce, which means that a large selection of food is not available as it would require to be kept in the freezer, and as any connoisseur knows this adversely affects the quality of fine food. Angus endeavoured to explain his position on food quality for fine dining and what his restaurant was recognised for but unfortunately it would seem that this was not acceptable to yourselves being of a subjective nature. The Sea Bass that was offered as an alternative was extremely fresh, having been bought only the day before from a local fish supplier and contrary to your suggestion it was neither previously cooked or frozen. As explained Cavens only ever offer the finest, freshest produce and to suggest otherwise is somewhat insulting.

As for offering to pay for your drinks it was noticed by our Hotel Manager that the offer was not made until after you had tried to disappear through the garden exit without paying. Upon finding the garden gate locked you then had to come back through the house by which time the owner had been alerted and you were confronted by him. It was felt the behaviour of both men at this point had become aggressive and threatening, which, combined with attempted non-payment, was felt to warrant calling the police. Had the owner not stood up to the behaviour he was certain you would have tried to bully your way out of paying for anything, and due to this behaviour he wanted to ensure you left the property without any further mis-hap or potential damage to the property, so yes he did follow you out.

We are very disappointed that any guest should try to leave without either paying for what they had consumed or resorting to undignified behaviour, something even Basil Fawlty would take exception to.
