“Excellent, welcoming and quiet spot in the borders”

After an all night flight and a grueling drive down from Glasgow airport to attend a wedding in Melrose, we couldn't have been happier on arrival at the Philipburn. The man on the front desk was very welcoming and helpful, answering questions, booking us a taxi, giving directions and even filling out the form to sign up for the Best Western reward program.

There is plenty of parking just up the pebbled driveway and the spacious room was modern and clean with crisp sheets and a modern bathroom with a nice view over the grounds, including the goldfish pond out front. There is no elevator which is no surprise in a smaller elegant hotels such as this but the front desk is more than happy to help you with your bags if you are one or two floors up.

There is a nice little reception room at the front of the hotel, a computer with internet and an excellent restaurant overlooking the back garden which features a giant chess set.
Breakfast was fabulous with a great selection of cereals, jams, buns and juices to start followed by a very friendly waitress taking down our made to order hot selection of eggs, bacon, sausage and more....

The location is very close to the picturesque center of Selkirk which is well worth the visit... but if you are not driving you will probably need a taxi or a good pair of walking shoes to tour the town.

An excellent stay and well recommended.

“Wonderful Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

I stayed in one of the self catering lodges called Little Philipburn it was excellent. The lodge was very comfortable and beautifully furnished with two single beds and a very good kitchen. Superb flat screen TV. The only complaint was the table was barely big enough for one to eat at let alone two which is the number of people the place sleeps. I had friends staying in another lodge and we ate mostly in the hotel where the menu choice was very good and the food delicious. The owners were very pleasant and helpful. An excellent choice for anyone wishing to spend time in the Borders.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review. We don't often get a review of the lodges which are located within the grounds of the hotel. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and will look forward to seeing you again.

“Excellent!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2011

We stayed for weekend in October on a B & B basis. Room 2 was lovely, very clean, freshly decorated with large en suite. Double four posted bed very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent- plenty of choice. Ate in bistro both nights as menu was extensive and food cooked to perfection. Staff were very helpful. No complaints at all. Would stay again.

“Setting the standard”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

Our annual party of exuberant pensioners chose the Philpburn this year. I must admit some doubts about the prospects of a long weekend in Selkirk, But this family run hotel sets a standard which VisitScotland could well use to show how small relatively inexpensive hotels should be run, Very clean, well run, excellent staff and good food. No pretentions to be the best at this or that, but in fact actually being the best without being perfect.

Our party gave the food a 95% approval rating. Only one room out of nine was given the thumbs down on account of its size. There was absolutely unanimous agreement that the staff were great. The hotel was easy to find with ample parking. Internet access and televisions worked. Newspapers were there first thing and breakfast was prompt. The only thing I can find to complain of is that the management aren’t golfers.

Our advice is don’t miss this one if you are looking for a base to stay in the Borders

“We had been charged for breakfast's we did not have .....awaiting Hotel Policy info”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2011

This Hotel has treated us very badly. We have never ever had to make a complaint regarding any Hotel sadly untill now.
No written information given re tarriffs, when we informed Hotel staff on arrival we will not be able to make breakfast, they failed to inform us we would be charged anyway.
When paying our bill , during check out , I questioned the bill, I was informed we would be reimbursed and the money would be creditted to our account. On arrival home I called the Hotel to complain as the over charge had not been paid into the bank, I was given waffle and said we now would not be reimbursed.
I made a complaint to Marie Wells who also gave me excuses about tarrifs etc, and discounted the fact what Hotel staff had informed us. I am currently taking advice on the matter. Although we have roots and family in Selkirk this Hotel will never be used or reccomended by us ,due to the way we have been treated. A weekend in the beautiful Selkirk has had a unhappy ending, we feel very let down. Local people in Selkirk are kind and homely , and are a credit to the Scottish Borders. I wish I could say the same for the Hotel and bad practice in terms of how Guests are over charged for meals that were cancelled, without being informed of the charge regardless.
Futher research is underway regarding Consumer rights, and how we were charged.
A very dissapointed JMorrison

You telephoned the hotel on Wednesday 24th August 2011 to make a reservation for a 2 night stay arriving on Friday 26th August 2011. You were quoted 2 tariffs one being room only the other bed and breakfast. You booked your stay on the bed and breakfast tariff. This was confirmed to you verbally on receipt of the booking on Wednesday 24th August and again by email on Thursday 25th August 2011 as per hotel proceedure. Your bill on checkout reflected the tariff of your choice.
