“Needs some money spent on it!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We spent two nights here and I have to say it wasn't the 4 star experience we had hoped for. Room was very dated although spotlessly clean. Bed was comfortable though and the room was nice and big. Shower looked about 20 years old but still gave a relatively powerful spray. I think what was most disappointing was the service we received. On arrival we were not offered help with our bags, nor were we given any information about when breakfast would be served, or where. However the receptionist did check we had a dinner reservation and was happy to change it for us to an earlier time. Dinner was v disappointing on the first night. The dining room was freezing and the heater beside us wasn't working. We requested that the heat was turned up on two occasions and after the second request we were offered another table - much cosier! Quality of food on both nights was ok, not on par with other four star hotels, but ok. Wine waiters on both nights were brilliant, and breakfast was also great, although could have been served a bit later on the sat am (9.30am finish, prompt!). We tried the cafe/bistro, lazels for lunch and it was terrible! Service very slow & scampi was horrid reformed stuff (despite being described as whole tail on menu). My husbands panini was good though. Leisure centre was good, and pool is nice and big which means plenty of room for kids to play, and others to swim.

Overall we wouldn't go back, we have stayed at the McDonald cadrona, just along the road, before and it far outshines the hydro.

Thank you for posting your review. We are glad you liked your room and sorry you weren't offered porter service on arrival. We did have a problem with the heater closest to your table that night, which was a real problem as it was indeed a cold night. I'm glad we were able to move you to a warmer table! We do apologise that service was slow in Lazels on the day of your visit, - all our food is cooked to order which can take a little time. We are also sorry you didn't enjoy your scampi - but it is most definitely wholetail!

“Pleasant weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We have just enjoyed a 4 day trip to Peebles Hydro. The accommodation was very nice with a lovely view over the hills. The opulence of the hotel was pleasant if a little frayed at the edges. The staff, especially in the dining room, were excellent but unfortunately I cannot say the same for the food. The breakfasts were good with a reasonable choice but dinner for two out of the three evenings was very disappointing. I have had better in a work canteen!! I had a lovely massage in the Health & beauty area which somewhat made up for the poor meals. What a pity as the staff were trying so hard.

Thank you for your review - we are glad you enjoyed your four day trip to Peebles Hydro, and that you liked your room and its lovely views. We are sorry you didn't enjoy two of your three dinners however - like all hotels and restaurants, we hear many nice compliments about our food, as well as having an occasional disappointed customer. If you'd like to get in touch, we'd be happy to discuss your comments in more detail as we'd love to welcome you back in the future.

“Peebles Hydro Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

I visited Peebles Hydro with my wife and three other couples. We stayed for three nights, dinner, bed and breakfast Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The rooms are a little "tired" and the carpets had not been thoroughly vaccumed.
The hotel has a fabulous view from the front overlooking the town and hills but unfortunately, we eight had four rear facing rooms where we only saw chimney pots, back walls and vents. Food was generally only average and one morning, my wife was served fish that had "gone off" and she had to send it back to the kitchen.
During our stay, there was a large function on over the first two of the three nights so the hotel was full.
At dinner on the first two nights, (when the function was in full swing), we received a soup course as well as starter and main. On the third night (after the function), the soup course was missing and soup became one of the first course options.
Staff in the dining room and bar were helpful, friendly and attentive but those in reception seemed harrassed - maybe reception was understaffed.
I may visit Peebles Hydro again but there are other hotels offering better value.

Room Tip: Ask for a front facing room.

Thank you for taking the time to post this review. We are sorry we couldn't offer you front facing rooms with their amazing views, as the hotel was otherwise full on the dates of your stay. We are also sorry you had some cause for complaint at dinner. Thank you for your kind comments on our staff, and finally, apologies from reception, who were indeed short staffed on the dates of your stay.

“Poor quality and disappointing”

We went to the Peebles Hydro for my mother in laws birthday. We had a meal and some of the party used the pool and had treatments. The restaurant was very poor and could do with a refurb. They said that they had not received deliveries that day so some of the choices were not on the menu. Very poor and disappointing. Very expensive.

This lady wrote to us after her visit to Lazels and made some rather exaggerated complaints about her meal. At the end of her letter, she 'requested' a full refund of the cost of her meal and her daughter's meal, plus petrol at 40p a mile. She also indicated that adverse publicity would follow if we did not accede to her request! Sadly, some people try to use Trip Advisor as 'leverage'. We are always willing to compensate a guest if we have let them down but in this case there were only a few very minor issues - for example her waitress had omitted to serve one side order of veg. Duck Spring Rolls were unavailable because no duck had arrived, but verything else on the fairly extensive menu was available. A discount was given at the time. We felt that we had been fair with the customer, and said this in our reply to her letter. We don't think Lazels needs a 'refurb', nor can we agree that it is 'expensive'. Our very popular swim lunches for example cost £30.00 for a three course lunch and full use of our great leisure facilities - large pool and gym, saua, steam room and spa bath. Many customers combine a swim lunch with some salon treatments and make a lovely relaxing day of it.

“Staff give this Hotel Magical Charm !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

I organised a special surprise birthday weekend for my husband with all our family.

We were completely charmed by this Hotel, probably more by the wonderful staff.

The staff here all have such a genuine welcoming, friendly and warm approach, ‘old fashioned’ in the nicest way possibly – nothing is a bother to them. This charm creates a wonderful atmosphere in the Hotel and it sprinkles onto all the guests – we got to know many guests in the short time we were there.

The ‘High Tea’ which is organised for the kids is just wonderful. The food is good also with a great variety.

The swimming pool was good, however, the temperature did get colder as the weekend went on.

On Saturday night there was a surprise – ‘Take Five’ ! Well, there’s actually only two lovely gentleman (but it doesn't matter), one singing and one on the keyboard – they were such great fun. We had a spontaneous Ceilidh Night – us, the kids and all the other guests – “a rare tear” was had by all !

We all had a wonderful memorable weekend and we would go back again !

Note to the McMillian Group: You have what many business would love – a wonderful team of people ! You would have an outstanding Hotel if you make further investments:

1 When driving up to your hotel the first thing that is noticeable is your office with piled
high filing cabinets and fluorescent lighting. If you can’t move your office, get curtains
that conceal the piled high cabinets and harsh lighting.

2 Refurbish your rooms – they really are so dated.

3 Get your plumbing examined, it makes the most strangest noises.

4 Heat the dining room, it really is very cold, especially in the evening.

5 Invest in new beds and pillows as soon as possible – they are very uncomfortable.

Room Tip: Superior rooms to the front have a wonderful view.
