“Shabby but no longer chic”

What a disappointment! The photos of the Waverley Castle Hotel on the Shearings website are recognisable but inaccurate. The hotel is in need of refurbishment.

We travelled by car - there was lots of space for parking because most of the guests arrived in 3 coaches. The coach park is at the side of the hotel, directly outside room 17 (our room!).

On arrival, the building looks magnificent. Closer inspection reveals broken guttering and downpipes causing the growth of green algae. Condensation can be seen on the inside of the windows. The smoking area directly outside the entrance is obviously the smoking area.

The reception area is bright, cheerful, welcoming and modern.

We were given the key to Room 17, a large, warm room on the ground floor. It has 2 windows which were completely blocked by a coach (see photos). The carpet is grubby. The decor is tatty. The bathroom is unsavoury with mould and poor cleanliness and decoration (see more photos). A dirty and wet towel had even been left in the bath! We took it to reception when we asked about an alternative room. We viewed two other rooms and decided to return to room 17. An room upgrade would have cost an extra £100.

The dining room, bar and entertainment room are on the first floor. These rooms are warm. Some of the corridors are chilly. The dining room was once a grand room. The tables are very close together making serving difficult for the staff. The table next to ours was 3" away. At breakfast and dinner, the atmosphere felt frenzied with everyone in a hurry. The meals are adequate. The bar staff worked hard to keep the queue down. We did not use the entertainment room because the entertainment did not appeal.

We learned that if we arrived for breakfast just after 9am, the coach parties had left and there were only a handful of guests in the room. Similarly, a delay in arriving for dinner means a quieter experience. I must add that the staff tried hard!

We will not stay here again.

Room Tip: We don't know! All 3 that we saw were shabby and dirty.

“Waverley Castle Hotel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

We have just returned from a 5 day break to the Waverley Castle.
I had read a few reviews, saying the standard rooms were in need of a make-over. I therefore decided to go for a Superior room. On arrival the room was clean and inviting.
Unfortunately the daily cleaning service was not as good as it should have been. The waste bin was'nt emptied regularly, and the bed was not made properly. We had paid £100 extra for the superior room, and expected it to be kept in good order.

The restaurant was quite nice, but I cannot say the same about the food.. We were given small portions, and hardly any vegetables.
The first night there, we ordered fish and chips, as we could'nt see anything else we fancied.
The battered fish, was like rubber, and we only got a very small amount of chips.

The staff at the hotel are very good. very friendly , especially Jackie, she is always there with a big smile.and will help sort out any problems.

The hotel is very nice, it is such a shame that the food is of such poor quality. Presentation is bad, and portions are too small.
Let's hope that things are sorted out, then the hotel will be very nice...

Room Tip: Pay for a superior room...

“Excellent entertainment/holiday”

Just had my first stay at the Waverley which was decided via the reviews on this website, I was not disappointed, the hotel does require some TLC and the food as generally OK. the staff were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. What made the New year was the resident entertainer James, his shows were fantastic and I now understand why people return to this hotel as it would have no appeal without this jewel in the crown. You can live with the shabby rooms just for the entertainment value. i would recommend everyone to go see this young man entertain you. A good time was had by all and it turned out to be a fantastic new year, will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: twin/double rooms are spacious but single rooms can be small and shabby

“No James”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

We stayed again at this hotel as part of national holidays 3 day break with 3 hour free bar certain drinks only, wine is Stowells on draught - yuk. The breakfast menu has not changed and the evening menu has had a slight make over, mutton dressed as lamb sort of change. At this point some peolple might say you get what you pay for and as it is a cheapish, depending on when you booked, holiday why complain. Well the point is cheap does not have to mean poor quality and some people were self drive so were paying more than the 3 day coach trip price for their stay.

As part of the Shearings group no change to the decor and the refurb were to the same standard paper and paint over the cracks. Unfortunatley the entertainment was a disappoint James was not on that weekend.

The hotel is about a 20 minute walk from Melrose and as the free bar does not start until 7.30 and you arrived at 3.00 ish then this is how they make up the money as people tend to have not alot to do so pay full price for the drinks.

This hotel was on an economy drive as you now only got one small bar of soap each in the room and the milk was off in the little plastic cartons, no free biscuits and only tea and coffee.

The bath panel was stuck on with masking tape and the sliding bathroom door did not slide if you wanted to close it you had to lift it off the floor and prop it against the hole, well the other person you shared with had to do this, of course if you were not getting on with your other half then they could leave you trapped while they enjoyed the free 3 hour bar and got your drinks for themeselves.
