“Excellent hotel, superbe food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

Stayed at Burts for the weekend 18th to 20th December. The hotel was warm and welcoming and the staff very helpful and friendly.

We stayed on a dinner, B&B basis and have to say the restuarant was excellent. One would pay significantly more for such quality food if you were in any major town or city.

I would and have recommended this hotel to friends and colleagues and will go back.

Room Tip: Our room (4) faced over the square and was an excellent size. If there was a critism it would be tha...

“Warm and cosy with good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

Stayed at Burts in Melrose at the end of November 2011 for one night for £133 B&B. The hotel has 23 rooms and the one we stayed in looked as if it had recently been refurbished, so maybe they all have? Anyway, lovely comfortable bed (standard double), plenty of wardrobe and draw space, T&C making stuff and decent telly. Super clean bathroom, with bath with integral shower and loads of hot water and plenty of towels. We ate in the restaurant but they do serve food in the bar which looked very good, and most of the tables in the bar were reserved so it is obviously popular (sunday evening). The restaurant was very quiet only the four of us plus a couple of other tables, but the food was very very good. We had the menu for £35pp and there was a choice of five different dishes for each course. It was a bit meat heavy, not much for veggies at all but there was a fish choice for each of the first two courses. I had a mullet started which was full of flavour with a wonderful crunchie skin and vennison haunch cooked very pink and melt in the mouth. Plenty of yummy puds too. We all enjoyed the food, no complaints at all. We had a french red at £22 which was one of the cheapest on the wine list. Breakfast was good with about five different juices, the usual cereals, fruit salad, prunes, yogurt etc and smokies, haddock, full english and "continental" which was a warm croissant, ham, brie and baby toms which was tasty. The service was fine for the evening meal but a bit slow and haphazard for breakfast - but as it was Monday morning guess the chef was having a lie in...

“Not Cheap but Comfortable and relaxing”

Melrose is a lovely small town in the centre of the Scottish Borders, on the Tweed river. The Burt is an old coaching inn which has been well modernised. The rooms are comfortable and well equipped though not spacious. They are quiet although we overlooked the main square. The Burt has its own parking.
We ate in the bar both nights; this is very busy but not boisterous. The food is good and so was breakfast – try the scrabled eggs wrapped in smoked salmon! – though we heard some complaints. We think because of the sheer pressure of so many people.
The nicest aspect of the hotel is is the staff, both on reception and waiting and the bar, though they appeared interchangeable! They remained friendly very helpful despite the obvious pressure they were working under. In the evenings the place was packed. The owner was also there working as hard as the staff.
Nice as it though we felt it was rather expensive for what it was - perhaps there is a Melrose factor?

“Excellent stay at Burts Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

My wife and I stayed at Burts Hotel for one night on Sunday 13 November 2011. The staff were extremly helpful and knowledgable. The Sunday lunch was as good as previously reported. The hotel and our bedroom was very clean and comfortable, and we will definately return for a longer stay in the future.

“Perfect Sunday Lunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

Our fist full day out in the Scottish Borders on this return trip, included a visit to Abbottsford, then hoping to find Sunday lunch without a reservation in nearby Melrose. Never one to really trust a guidebook completely, our Eyewitness Guide, listed Burts Hotel, which we found easily in this charming town center. A warm welcome and waiting table for four made the right impression. It was an easy choice to order the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, which all four of us did. It's pure simplicity and excellence was as memorable as was the fact that we all became silent and fixated on enjoying this wonderful meal. Conversation returned quickly as we then chose the sticky toffee pudding for dessert. We had a fabulous week in the Borders, and enjoyed many things, but the one unanimous vote was Sunday lunch at Burt's Hotel. Great atmosphere, great service, and really great food.
