“Nice hotel, perhaps slightly overpriced....”

We stayed here overnight in October 2011 when I was bridesmaid at a friends wedding. We found the room to be comfortable and suited to our needs but perhaps a bit overpriced. The hotel is set in lovely grounds and the house itself is quite grand, but I did feel the rooms could do with some updating ( I realise that may not be inkeeping with the theme of the hotel which is quite traditional in its decor taste). The bathrooms in the rooms seem to have been modernised and are very nice, but even re-decorating the rooms would go far towards improving them.
Breakfast is very good and cooked to order- there seemed to be a wide choice of foods.
Bar food is very good and I would definitely reccommend eating at the hotel whether you are a guest or not. Drink prices are perhaps above average for the area, but there is a great choice behind the bar.
Staff are pleasant and there is ample parking.
Hotel is set in its own ground so very quiet overnight.

“Our second visit.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

This was our second visit to the Mansfield and still can't praise it enough. The room was excellent, lovely double fourposter, the room was huge and well decorated.

We ate in the restaurant and the food and service were great. The bar had been renovated since our last stay. There wasn't much wrong with it but it is so much more welcoming now. The bar food looked really nice, plenty of people making the effort to climb the hill to the hotel.

We promised we'd be back and Matt and his team didn't disappoint.

“Expected more from this hotel”

On arrival I was shown to my room (room 11) the room was big with a large kingsized bed (two singles together) but unfortunately the decor of the bedroom let it down, very old and shabby; there was a panelled wall that the TV was on and this was hanging off at the bottom. The windows were draughty which made the room cold. This was a shame as the bathroom was decorated to a much better standard....

Unfortunately the room was on the lower ground floor and located under the corridor that runs from reception to the bar, lounge and restaurant so all night people were walking around which was disturbing. There was also the fact that a footpath running through the gardens had two spot lights at ground level which shone through the curtains until very late on the night until thankfully there were switched off.

I had dinner in the bar which was disappointing, after waiting for over 20 minutes for someone to even staff the bar the food was fairly substandard albeit that the waitress was very friendly.

I opted for the continental breakfast and it was lovely, the service was speedy and friendly and the food was enjoyable.

On checking out there was a problem with the bill as my company's credit card details were given at the time of booking but this had not been processed - it took about half an hour to sort out but the issue was resolved in the end.

Overall if I had to stay here again I would ask for a better room and probably dine elsewhere on the evening.

Room Tip: Ask for a well located room where you will not be disturbed by other guests using the bar or staff u...

“Does not deliver”

This hotel has so much to offer - beautiful setting in a great location, nice rooms, and well cared for gardens. such a pity that the service does not match.

While the staff are friendly, the less than professional service and mediocre presentation and delivery of an uninspired menu does not impress. Staff are less than attentive to the needs of guests - unenthusiastic and indifferent service, I felt I was interrupting a private party.

Room Tip: rooms differ, so ask for best available

“Stay good but food mediocre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

Made a blind call to this hotel on way north. Nice location above Hawick. Quiet unenthusiastic welcome but shown to clean and spacious room- warm and very comfortable with good ensuite.
eating -bar had a few people in and we chose to eat in pretty and well decorated restaurant. We were the one ones in, so thought service should be good and as a few people in bar, food should at least be ok.
Surprised to be told we might need to wait a while... Not sure why-it was a Mon night so maybe fewer staff. Anyway, waited a while- we weren't in hurry which was a good job. Very salty soup as a starter and the pricey venison was very very well done and really not good served with very plain selection of boiled veg. Service again fell short as given we had waited so long, plates were very quickly gathered. No one inquired how the meal was- felt a bit like they were not really bothered. On check out next day, again no courtesy to ask how stay had been. If you need a good room then this place is very good but as a restaurant experience would not recommend at all based on this visit.
