“Toast for Breakfast”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Today we stayed at the Rowantree Hotel in Oban.
The first thing you will notice when you enter the car park is the bad greasy smell of the Restaurant.
Our room was to the front, so we only were confronted with the greasy smell on the stairs down to the breakfast room. The only bread available for breakfast was plain toast. Besides that you could have your standard eggs, bacon, sausage thingy.
The room itself was quite big, but did not seem to have been cleaned thoroughly before we entered. There were fingerprints everywhere in the bathroom.
Maybe we just had a bad day in the off-season, we don't know as this is our only stay.

“Nice stop over.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

Centrally located.

Not the prettiest to look at from outside. I assume I had a recently refurbished room. As it was clean & bright & modernised. Not so sure about the laminate floor. I do like a carpet.

Bed was ok & slept well enough.

Facilities were decent enough once inside, Free WiFi which was good as I need to be connected. Also free parking.

Pretty mainstream menu however I did enjoy my steak downstairs. Breakfast was good enough too.

At £50 including breakfast. Very good value.

“Friendly Welcoming Hotel In Oban Centre”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2011

This rooms in the hotel have recently been refurbished. They are spacious with the double having a king size bed. Very nice bath rooms. There is no lift and the stairs to the rooms are narrow so those with mobilty issues may have a problem.. The staff are very helpful and friendly and will uplift your luggage as reqested.. Breakfast was part buffet and part waiter service. Very plentiful and tasty. The kippers are recommended! Being in the centre of town the hotel is on the main street. Rooms at the back are quiet as is the front although you hear traffic noise if the window is open. There is limited parking at the rear of the hotel. There is a Steak House Restaurant on the ground floor and the portions are generous and tasty. Rooms with breakfast in August were £90 per night. Not cheap but on a par with bed and breakfast, and three star hotels in Oban.
An enjoyable experience and one we would repeat.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quiet and windows can be opened without traffic noise.

“Lovely little hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

This is a lovely hotel, clean and basic. The Steakhouse that is with it is a little pricey but the whole of Oban is not cheap. Hotel room on front of building over looking main street so can be a little noisey from traffic if you need the windows open. Hotel room had lovely huge bed and room was very clean.

“Misleading advertising, very disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2011

The first thing we noticed on arrival was the location of the hotel, not on the harbour front as stated online but up the street behind. We drove into the car park which was tiny and not 'large' as stated online yet again. As soon as we stepped out of our car the smell of grease hit us and made us both feel physically sick. Obviously the smell was from the steakhouse which is in the hotel. They desperately need a new extractor fan system for this!!!! Check in was ok, was asked if we had a vehicle and when replied yes was told to make sure we park on the left side as the right side was for the scottish hydro shop staff next door! If we had to park on their side then we would be asked to move our car as and when necessary!!! Proceeded to our room on the second floor, this was a godsend as the smell of grease from the steakhouse reached up to the first floor. The room looked ok on first entering, spacious, newly decorated so we thought maybe not too bad after all. How wrong were we, the shower was boiling hot and we could not alter the temperature. No soap in the dispensers on the wall. On our second day we had to return to our room mid morning, we were astounded at what we found. Our room door was wedged open and there was no staff on our floor. I was very distressed with this and the realisation that anyone could have entered the hotel either front or back door and made their way easily through the hotel and into the rooms. We tried to find the cleaning staff who had obviously left the door open but there was no sign of anyone, only towels on the staircase along with a huge bunch of keys, these were obviously keys for each room. Again anyone could have taken these keys. The security issues at his hotel are appalling. We locked our door shut and when we returned later in the day our room had not even been cleaned, the floors were dirty and the towels were not replaced. I had to ask for towels. The breakfast was awful, coffee and tea was cold, the food was like rubber and cold. No choice of fresh fruit or kippers as advertised. The toaster took a long time to toast the bread. No free wi fi as advertised also. Very disappointing stay at this hotel and will not be back.
