“Excellent staff!”

Just back from a lovely weekend break at the Caledonian. Not disappointed, lovely public rooms, all clean and bright. Our double wasn't a sea view, but the room was spacious and clean as was the ensuite with lovely good quality towels. The breakfasts were good and kept you going for the rest of the day. The evening meal was included in our deal but we chose to eat at the lovely fish restaurant on the pier called Ee-usk which was fab on our second night. A surprise fire alarm showed that the staff knew their stuff and gently ushered us all outside for the minimum of time until the fire brigade decreed it safe for us to return. Will go back again next time in Oban as they gave us a really good deal.experience.

Room Tip: 203 not sea view but spacious and quiet. Only negative point was when the lift broke down and we had...

“Nice stay”

My boyfriend and I were on a little tour of the UK,when we booked this hotel. We got an upgraded up for £20 per night which was well worth it. The room was very nice, could have done with a flat screen TV but it was nice, the breakfast was also nice. I have no complaints with this hotel, was good the two nights we were there.

“Went the extra mile”

We arrived in Oban late afternoon with nowhere to stay; tried a few places and all 'booked up' - we needed a family room (2 adults, 1 child) and went into the Caledonian and they couldn't do enough to accommodate us - they didn't have a room ready but they looked to see what they could do and asked how tall our child was...... so we told them and they said 'we have a nice room overlooking the harbour' - can you come back in an hour? So we left and went back an hour later - and Wow "What a view" - Over the harbour with ferries coming and going, really, really nice. Had a meal in the restaurant, which we enjoyed too.

The reason my review late? We went there when I was on treatment for the big 'C' and we were just 'reflecting' on those dark days .....

Room Tip: Can't comment on the 'Children's activities' as we never asked/needed/checked for th...

“Nice hotel, shame about food.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We booked our room through Groupon deal and had to make do with only the only weekend that was left. Apparently every weekend was fully booked til end of March? Not sure about that. Our room was of a good size, although no sea view for us, however it was rather noisy being next to the lift.
Breakfast was lovely although not sure i would have been happy paying £13.95 for it. Our main gripe with the hotel was our dinner that we had on the Saturday night. When we booked it we were asked if we wanted to take advantage of the hotels wine and dine deal, £29.99 for 3 courses and a bottle of wine. We didn't get a bottle of wine as we didn't realise until we left, the menu had a choice of 3 things for each course, we both chose the roast beef, which you could have soled your shoes with, the yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes were that badly burnt they could have put a window in. And i think my starter of prawns Marie Rose was straight out of the freezer and jar. Not very nice at all, perhaps we would have been better visiting one of the other restaurants in the area.
I would have thought that considering the hotel was so busy a wee bit more effort would have gone into the cooking and also choice of menu.
All in all we had a nice stay at the Oban Caledonian Hotel however it could have been so much better if we had finished off our stay with a lovely meal, sadly it wasn't to be. I think we would stay at this Hotel again however we would'nt be taking up any dine in deals.

Thanks again.

Thank you for placing your comments on trip advisor. Upon reading your review it was pleasing and very positive to here that there were many aspects of your stay which were enjoyable, but I was extremely sorry to read that there were points during your visit, which had caused you concern, particularly with reference to the standard of the food served in our restaurant. I have now investigated the points you have raised with the head chef and I can now assure you that the problems you experienced within the hotel, and highlighted for our attention are already being addressed. Thank you once again for your feedback Stewart Walker General Manager

“A friendly hotel with historical quirky character”

Our evening in Oban was a spur of the moment plan. We checked out a few other hotels on the sea front and some were cheaper and had nice rooms but none captured our heart as much as the room we were shown when we checked this one out. A corner room with 3 windows looking over to the ferry port, out to sea and down the high street. We got to see all of Oban nearly from our room.Fntastic. Even the bathroom had a great view out to sea from sitting on the loo! A large room tastefully decorated and best of all warm. So many hotels room are cold and take ages to warm up and was lovely to be able to relax straight away.

The floor sloped so much the furniture sat at strange angles to the walls - even the loo was at an angle but we felt it was part of the charm - an inevitable factor in an old building. The room was large and had comfy chairs and occasional tables so you can relax with your coffee taking in the view of the town and sea. Lots of clothes storage in heavy dark wood period furniture and a splendid big sleigh bed that looked lovingly polished.

Down sides are the pillows and downy are very thin poor quality. The downy was not an issue as the room was warm but even asking for extra pillows 3 pillows went down to the support of one once you put you head down! Such a small thing to rectify. The TV was old tube TV that didn't get many chanels. Ok you don't normally come on holiday to watch TV but when you do it's good to get all the normal chanels and a better TV (even budget hotels can do these things)

Breakfast was nice but my husband is vegetarian and his only option was the full breakfast with no meat but wasn't given extra eggs to make up. We wanted more tea but the staff had vanished. I liked to room though the tall chairs gave a bit of privacy at your table.

We would like to go back but before we paid full price I would like to know these little things were rectified!

Room Tip: Pay that bit extra to get the sea view - it is such a fantastic view, sometimes dolphins swim in the...
