“total disappointment and vastly overpriced.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2010

We were totally disappointed with our stay. The room and carpet was dusty. The tea and coffee supplies were minimal. The bar was cosy but the menu read like a fish and chip shop. Our meal was returned as cold and the sauce on the tough chicken tasted as though it was made from a packet. The "Ceann Mòr "restaurant mentioned on their website restaurant was not availble for dinner so when the bar was full food had to be eaten in a drab annex. The breakfast dining room was laid out like a school room, rows of tables and the floor is covered in dust. The residents lounge and whisky lounge which they boast about on the website was unavailabe. We had inteded to stay several nights but left after one. For £90 per night we were well and truely ripped off

“Beautiful, old style en so very friendly!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2010

This hotel is run by Somin and Yvonne for 20 months now, and they really really love the place. And it shows! In their pleasant friendlyness, the cosyness, the beauty of the hotel. It's really a gem! And the environment had al we looked for: great walks, solitude, relaxation, the "scottish feeling. Beautiful!

“room decor was like something out of the 1970,s also cold drab heaters not working and cheap nasty bedding!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2010

we arrived on a lovley April day to attend a wedding nearby. We were immediatly taken aback at the shabbiness of the place and the dark and drab decor! The rooms offered no luxury for the asking price either..... thin cheap curtains that were hanging off the rail poor quality thin duvets with very dated covers as well as dated carpets and wallpaper ie (woodchip wallpaper painted yellow in bathroom) The bathroom suite was out of the seventies era... the cheapeast possible type with tiles faling off the wall. There were no surfaces to put anything on and makeshift furnishings in bedroom. only 1 bedside lamp that worked, The day of the wedding was cold and the only heater in the room refused to work. we had to contact the owner who supplied us with a convector(the next day) The joy of getting washed and prepared for a wedding was taken away with such poor facilities! We returned late to the hotel that night and almost froze due to the lack of heating,,,the duvets were so thin that we had to try and sleep in our dressing gowns!! The staff did provide proper duvets the following night!! The dining room was sparse and cold and the only 2 other guests we met ther felt the same as us! However..... a tactful complaint had to be made to the proprieters even though we had identified that they were fairly new owners who were obviously beginning to show signs of slowly renovating the place. My husband pointed out that the hotel rates reflected the general hotel accomodation rates in the area but that it also had to be pointed out that the accomodation and comfort of the Culfail was sub standard therfore rates had to reflect that until such a time that improvements could justify the present rates. The proprieter duly offered us one nght free (we were staying 3) and while the offer was reasonble it did not take away from the fact that we had a miserable stay and we still felt that over £200 for a family of three for having had sleepless nights and cold rooms was too much!!! On a lighter note staff were pleasant and food was good!

“Fantastic traditional building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2009

A very traditional Scottish hotel that is undergoing subtle upgrades by the very friendly new owners. We checked in late and they opened the kitchen especially. The bar looks fantastic and the log fire give's it that special feel. The area has a very quaint shop and a small brewery that produces real ale's and the hotel is only a short distance to the coast. We Can't wait to return to see how the upgrades are going.
