This hotel is a bit worn and tired in it's appearance, but adequate for what it is. When we arrived it was fairly quiet. The bar seemed only a place to frequent if you are a regular or local. I got the impression that guests staying in the hotel would feel out of place if they decided to drink in there. The staff were friendly enough, we were directed to our rooms, told when and where breakfast was served and that was that. We didn't really see much more of them, unless you go in the bar. Check-out is done the night before departure, or if staying one night, when you check-in. Quite a novel idea but a good one as it avoids confusion, means that you don't get delayed on departure the following morning trying to find someone to do check-out and there's no pressure. The reason they do this is because there's no Reception and everything is transacted fom the bar. You just lock the room and leave the key on a table at the bottom of the stairs before you go, obviously the check-out is done this way because the bar is shut in the mornings.
The accommodation - was comfortable and clean. We had 2 rooms, a double with a single bed where I slept with my children for two nights and a double only where my wife slept for two nights, then my wife and I swapped over for one night - I get to review both rooms. The "Family Room" had a reasonable amount of space, was clean and comfortable but desperately needed painting. Some skirting boards had no paint at all and the place where the tea/coffee facility was kept, was just plywood. My daughter got a splinter from it. The bathroom was spotlessly clean and nice to use. At night, a lovely great halogen light on the fire escape outside the window, lit up our room like Old Trafford!!! Great for those who don't mind the city dwelling "light pollution" but luckily the children were so tired each night they flaked out anyway. At least it made up for the dismal main light in the room. The door lock was extremely stiff indeed, to the point that my wife had to open the door for me each time with much fiddling around. The double was equally no better, only here, in addition, the door closer was broken, the window was wedged firmly open with a block of wood and wouldn't budge in either direction and the bathroom, internal in this room, had no extractor fan.
Breakfast - was good. There was cereal, juice and toast, all self service, and to the dolcit tones of Chris Evans. Excellent as you could make what you wanted. Everything you needed was help yourself and you order your cooked breakfast from the waitress who was friendly. Adequate amount of food, well cooked. No complaints.
Evening Meal - sadly we were not told of or offered (if there was any) food from the bar. No bar menu was forthcoming, so we assumed no food served in the evenings.
Value for money - 2 Adults and 2 Children in 1 Family and 1 Double Room for 3 nights Bed & Breakfast in Oban at the height of the holiday season in August - Total £400 - Yes, I'd say good value for it's location.
Generally - the hotel was in need of a bit of TLC with the painting, the carpet on the stairs was a bit worn, and the lighting inside the public areas could have been better. We were a little concerned on the second night that the room cleaning had been abandoned halfway through and the cleaning cupboard on the landing left open all night with the light on and cleaning stuff left out, but this was rectified the following day. Use the Car Park opposite the hotel if driving. It's only £5 for each 24 hours and tell the man in the kiosk you're staying at the hotel. The Ferry Terminal for Mull etc can practically be seen from the hotel - definately heard and the Train Station is minutes away. Excellent location for visiting Mull and Islands of Iona and Staffa.
Stay there again - Yes, no reason not to but please make an effort to fix the problems I've highlighted to make it an even nicer stay next time.
Room Tip: No Lift. No Reception. Rooms generally OK but watch the ones at the back near the fire escape for wi...

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review of the hotel. It is very much appreciated to get such an in depth review and also one where the criticism is both constructive and allows me to to clearly see your experience as a guest. This very helpful.
Our bar attempts to be all thing to all people. Please let me assure you our locals enjoy connecting with the visitors - its one of the nicest things about living and working in Oban is the opportunity to mingle with people from both all walks of life and from all over the world. I'm sorry you did not feel comfortable in the bar. Maybe next time..
I am glad you found your check in and check out efficient. As you could probably see many guests are catching ferries, trains or buses so being to make a quick getaway in the mornings is important to many of our guests.
On going maintenance is very important to the business. I am so sorry about your wee girl's finger. This summer every bedroom door has been replaced with new one hour fire doors - this caused a couple of issues with door closers and locks. This has now been rectified. Thank you for making me aware of the other painting issues within that room - the painters are there as I write. Just a small aside, if you come back, there is a switch for the bathroom extractor outside the bathroom door. It can be at the on position ie it goes on and off with the light or the completely off position. I should have said to you. Next year I am looking to replace all our light fittings with new efficient LED lights. The blinds have been replaced so the essential fire escape light should not cause any more sleep deprivation. To summarize, all essential maintenance and improvements are done however cashflow sometimes means we do not get as far as we want.
I am glad you enjoyed our breakfasts. No comment on Chris Evans..
Unfortunately, we don't do evening meals. We are very close to the centre where there are many great options for food from fish and chips to delicious seafood and lots more in between including great cafes, a steak house and Italian restaurants.
To conclude, we will probably never have a lift but a new stair carpet is top of the list and thanks for highlighting housekeeping shortcomings - a training issue which was resolved quickly. This is an old building where maintenance is an ongoing priority cashflow allowing. Also, I embrace the opportunity to connect with past guests and use their feedback to improve customer experience which at the end of the day is good news for both the customer and the business.
Thanks again.
