“Warm welcome, warm hostel”

Rob made us feel very welcome and even gave us some of their own milk when we realised that we'd not got any with our groceries. Importantly, he was not intrusive or fussy, just helpful and friendly.
The inside was warm, clean and spacious, don't be put off by the aging exterior, i understand that there is an ongoing programme of renovation (have you thought of using volunteers?), this will be a huge job and quite rightly they have started by providing a warm clean interior, ie bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchen.
The location is superb, perhaps only spoiled by the large amounts of dog mess on the path to the beach: i know a birder from Strathbeg exercises his dog there, could a bin be provided? The best way to describe it is to say that it was the exact opposite of the previous place we stayed, which on the outside appeared amazing but ultimately was a huge disappointment. I loved the place, would definitely recommend and hope to revisit Rattray again.

“A pharologist's dream!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2010

This hostel is in a former lighthouse accommodation block. Set right on a deserted dune filled beach which extends for miles.
The accommodation is basic but very comfortable and relaxed, with plenty of space. Well equipped kitchens, sitting areas and bathrooms.
The views are stunning and wildlife abundant. There is something great about looking out of your bedroom window at Rattray head lighthouse!
A word of warning though, the road up to the Hostel is long and in poor repair, if traveling in a car with poor suspension or which is low on the road take it very carefully!!

“Lovely quiet setting with a homely feel”

Stayed three nights while on a cycling tour and enjoyed it very much. First impression on arriving in the drizzle was a bit disappointing, but it's got cosy rooms, not an institutional feel, and the views outside are always changing with the weather. You might struggle if you try ambitious cooking and it might be a bit cramped if very busy, but there's plenty of space to breathe right on the doorstep! Quite a way to the shop or places to eat.

“Great!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 May 2010

The Owners are friendly and make a real effort to keep their business eco-friendly. The location is lovely and scenic. Wish I had been there in the summer rather than when there was snow on the ground. Great Value as well.

“FANDABBYDOZY !!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 April 2010

Just returned home this evening from a one week stay at this hostel. It was absolutely fantastic. We were sad to leave this morning. We went with our 2 Jack Russells who thought it was "Doggy Heaven" ! It was great to be able to take our dogs and we all got a very warm welcome (including dog beds and bickies!).The hostel is set in a stunning tranquil location and although we were chasing around with our dogs on the beach and through the dunes (them after rabbits, us trying to keep up with them!)we also managed to fully recharge our batteries with copious amounts of sleep everynight because of the blissfull silence (actually, we slept in so late some mornings it was embarrassing!). All in all it was exactly what we all needed. There´s plenty to see & do if you want, or just chill out if you want, your call. We came across this hostel luckily by googling "dog friendly hostels in scotland" and read the reviews and gave it a go even though there was a neagative one by someone.....think they must have been reviewing somewhere completely different! ....GO !! ENJOY !! can´t say more than that.........other than thanks so much once again, 4 happy bunnies from County Durham ! x
