“Thanks again for a great meal and stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Would just like to thank George and his staff for making our stay on Saturday 4th February another memorable one. We have been here on quite a few occasions including our wedding two years ago, so we decided to go there for my husband Dave's birthday. Met by George, he lead us through to the bar to have a drink whilst checking out the menu. I couldn't make up my mind, so I asked George if there were any specials and there was lamb for the main course, that was it decided. Both Dave and my starters were excellent. He had the parsnip and pear soup, which I tasted, mmmmmm. I even asked George to check with the chef what was in it! I had the seafood pot with Thermidor sauce, wow wow wow. Absolutely packed of prawns, salmon, mussels and crayfish. Yum. Only thing I would have served a nice bit of rustic grainy bread instead of the ciabatta but it certainly didn't spoil my starter. My lamb was just melt in the mouth and fantastic veggies just done to a t. Dave had the fish and it was lovely too. He couldn't eat any more, I however couldn't resist the cheeseboard. Lovely. All washed down with a lovely bottle of wine. Price is good too. Might be slightly dearer than your pub grub, but so worth it to get something different from the usual Aberdeen food.

Then unknown to me, Dave had arranged with George earlier to stay the night. So we stayed in one of the lovely newly furbished bedrooms and the shower, amazing. Only wee thing, maybe update the bed and pillows, not the most comfy, but certainly did not dampen our stay. Breakfast lovely, buffet starter, then you choose what you want from the hot menu. Its never a problem if you want more coffee and toast as well. Can't wait to go again.

“Nice Hotel With Good Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

Stayed for one night in December 2011. A pleasant and friendly welcome from the guy on reception and with the formalities taken care of very quickly I went upstairs to my room. There didn't seem to be a lift.

I am no fan of Aberdeen and Dyce hotels. They are invariably staffed by rude people and are over-priced. The food is always drab, uninspiring and tasteless. I am happy to say the Craighaar suffers from none of these problems.

My standard room was warm and comfortable although there was no free wi-fi internet which is a bugbear of mine in hotels who charge their guests handsomely. The TV had a number of satellite channels. As it was quite late when I checked in I decided to order room service, a salad and some soup. I wasn't expecting anything special just the standard Aberdonian fat-laden gruel but I couldn't have been more wrong.

After a wait of some twenty minutes a lady brought me my food and by looks alone it looked delicious. The salad was substantial and very well and thoughtfully presented. It tasted delicious, as did the soup. I was very impressed with the standard of food.

After a good nights sleep I left in the early morning after ordering a taxi through reception. This caused some problems with the night porter who seemed to be a cross between Basil Fawlty and Hannibal Lecter. He couldn't quite grasp the concept of me waiting in reception until the taxi came. In between arguing with other guests waiting in reception he kept insisting I hadn't handed my room key in, which I had. I think he may have had anger management problems.

I would have given the Craighaar a 5 if it wasn't for having to pay for wi-fi and the angry night porter.

I will be glad to stay there again.

“Nice Room and good breakfast.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2011

Stayed in a standard room which was quite nice and well decorated. Looked very recently refurbished. Smallish room but OK.
Breakfast was better than average with a fresh cooked breakfast.
Locatipn - I guess you would only stay here in Dyce if you had reason to. It's not handy for Aberdeen.

My ratings are for this price point as its not an expensive hotel.

“Nice hotel, shame about the restaurant.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

The hotel is obviously an old building with very poor soundproofing. Every single flight is clearly heard through the single glazed windows.

The rooms themselves have been refurbished nicely. The showers don't seem to have anti-scald devices as there is the occasional three second blast of either freezing or boiling hot water every couple of minutes. Cleanlyness could be improved on in the ensuite & grout is falling out of the tiles under the sink.

My main gripe is the restaurant staff. Although the food has improved a lot since last time I stayed here, the staff have gone downhill. I stayed for a week & only twice was I told about the specials. I know there were specials the other nights as I heard other people being told about them. Sometimes I got an amuse bouche, sometimes I didn't, but when I did, it was the same thing, some sort of red liquid with a cucumber stick. I was never actually told what it was!

Ordering a drink was very hit or miss. Sometimes I had to ask for it again as it never appeared. My dinner order was completely wrong one night & I didn't even get an apology. The only reasons I ate in the restaurant was because the standard of the food had improved & my company were paying for it.

Overall my stay was quite dissappointing.
