“well this was different”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

this is a great small hostel that has a very quirky vibe. it is decorated with masks, wall hangings, bhudda statues, hand painted indian tables. etc. all brought back from the owners extensive travels.

Steve, the manager introduced us to the city over a cup of coffee. Derry had much more worth seeing than we had originally anticipated. We were going to stay for just one night and this was where things took a turn from the norm. Steve said that if we decided to stay for more than one night, we could be the first to try out his new special offer . he said that he was introducing an offer whereby guests could stay on a "tips only" basis. we were a bit dubious of this and only intending to stay one night. he said however that he would leave the offer open to us should we decide to stay another night.

as it happened we had a great night out and stayed for another night. steve asked us again , did we want to be the first to try out his new offer. we thought, what the hell.

he gave us an envelope with a note explaining alll about his new offer. it said we could just leave a tip in the envelope as we were leaving. it was actually a bit of fun deciding what we would pay... this is where steve actually won out. we ended up tipping a few pounds over the normal rate as his advertised rates were actually alot cheaper than the hostel that we stayed in in belfast , and his was much better.

im sure alot of people will pay under what they normally would pay, but steve was very enthusiastic about making sure we had a great time in derry so we decided in the end to actually give more. it was well worth it.

A nice hostel close to city walls. Friendly staff and rooms clean and tidy. Free tea and toast in the morning.

“Stayed in May 2011”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

There are two hostels around the block from each other. I stayed at the newest of the two.The rooms were nice and comfortable. The manager was a really great guy, i had actually experienced a nightmare roommate (actually concerned for my own safety) and I went downstairs and decided to sleep on the couch in the common area. Turned out, he was in there too, he had heard the noise (result of my crazy roommate when he came home late) and was there keeping watch. He asked me why i felt the need to sleep downstairs when I had a room to stay in. I told him the whole story and why i was shook up. He was very upset and disturbed for my situation and told me he would immediately kick the roommate out. I asked him not to because nightmare roommate already fell asleep. He was so kind and told me I could stay on the couch and even brought me a sheet to try to stay warm.

That following morning he informed me that he kicked out the nightmare roommateat 7 am sharp. He then apologized for my experience. I told him not to worry, it had nothing to do with the hostel, it was the idiocy of the guy staying with me. I will spare the details of that incident.

I stayed here two nights and they had very clean bathrooms and the kitchen downstairs was clean and comfortable. The location was perfect and we were able to get to everywhere we wanted within walking distance. I was also able to park directly in front of the hostel.

I would certainly stay at this hostel again and I thank the staff for being so accommodating and good to me.

“Great hostel - more like a group house!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

We stayed in their extension - another house which seemed to be a carbon-copy of the main/primary hostel - which is on the same block. Our buildling was beautifully and thoughfully decorated (the owners are travellers themselves - they share their photo albums of their adventures in the common area). Each floor (containing 2-3 rooms) had its own bathroom and there were additional bathrooms on other floors. No problems having to wait in line. The communal area was very homey. A large open space kitchen and dining area, a sun room, and a beautiful garden. Another communal area had a TV and computer attached to the wireless (although they also had free wireless throughout the home). The hosts (who stayed in the primary building) were extremely hospitable, be preapared for a quick orientation of the city upon arrival. Location is slightly remote but is only maybe 6 or so blocks from the historic city wall.

“lovely old house close to the action”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2011

great location right near the bogside. the hostel has 2 loctions, we stayed in a 4 bed female dorm in their princes street house around the corner from the main hostel. the house was lovely with a homey feel, though it was starting to shows signs if wear and tear and the beds were not particularly comfortable. 2 of the staff members we met were helpful and friendly but the girl who checked us in was totally hopeless and did not have a clue! on street parking is available for free if you can get it, otherwise you might have to park far away from the hostel.
