this is a great small hostel that has a very quirky vibe. it is decorated with masks, wall hangings, bhudda statues, hand painted indian tables. etc. all brought back from the owners extensive travels.
Steve, the manager introduced us to the city over a cup of coffee. Derry had much more worth seeing than we had originally anticipated. We were going to stay for just one night and this was where things took a turn from the norm. Steve said that if we decided to stay for more than one night, we could be the first to try out his new special offer . he said that he was introducing an offer whereby guests could stay on a "tips only" basis. we were a bit dubious of this and only intending to stay one night. he said however that he would leave the offer open to us should we decide to stay another night.
as it happened we had a great night out and stayed for another night. steve asked us again , did we want to be the first to try out his new offer. we thought, what the hell.
he gave us an envelope with a note explaining alll about his new offer. it said we could just leave a tip in the envelope as we were leaving. it was actually a bit of fun deciding what we would pay... this is where steve actually won out. we ended up tipping a few pounds over the normal rate as his advertised rates were actually alot cheaper than the hostel that we stayed in in belfast , and his was much better.
im sure alot of people will pay under what they normally would pay, but steve was very enthusiastic about making sure we had a great time in derry so we decided in the end to actually give more. it was well worth it.
