We stayed at the Slieve Donard Hotel midweek in January 2012. The hotel was quiet and we chose to upgrade to a Resort room (228). It was well worth the extra cost as it was a beautiful room overlooking the sea and mountains. The room was beautifully appointed with a large kingsize bed (one of the most comfortable that I have ever slept in) and a sitting area with sofa, armchair, coffee table and flat screen TV. The bathroom was tastefully tiled in black and white with a full-size bath and a large walk-in shower as well. The only thing that I would have said that was missing from the room was a mini fridge.
The spa facilities are excellent and the pool in particular is very relaxing with views of the sea and the mountains through the floor to ceiling windows.
The hotel staff are one of its greatest assets. From the moment we arrived we were given a warm and friendly reception. All of them were courteous, helpful and a pleasure to talk to. They really went out of their way to make our stay a pleasant one.
The public areas are decorated to a high standard and are spotlessly clean and well-maintained. Again the staff are attentive but not intrusive.
We ate in the Percy French Restaurant both nights. This restaurant is situated in the grounds of the hotel and has a good choice of food at reasonable prices. Like other reviewers we found the breakfast somewhat disappointing for a 5 star hotel. It is buffet style and you have to make your own toast! There is also very little choice of fresh fruit unlike many other hotels of the same or lower standard. This would be my one gripe with the hotel.
The Slieve Donard is situated in one of the most scenically beautiful areas of Northern Ireland being in the Mountains of Mourne and also on the coast. There are many beautiful forest parks in the area and for anyone into hiking it is an ideal location. It is also within an hour's drive of Belfast. It has something to offer for everyone.
Though maybe a bit expensive I would highly recommend the Slieve Donard for a relaxing and luxurious stay.
Room Tip: Choose a room at the front with a sea view. Definitely worth the extra cash. If you can afford an up...
