We happened upon THE OLD STABLES "by accident" having failed to find accomodation around Rhossilli and Port Eynon which was either a) available, or b) looked "ok" (we are great believers in "first impressions" and "gut-instinct"!!
So we turned-up on spec. having driven past, beginning to panic about not finding accomodation approaching 7pm. on a sunny July Saturday.
Margaret cheerily informed me that we were in luck; and Layton showed us to an attractive split-level room, with the sleeping accomodation upstairs. The decor was attractive, the room spotlessly clean. The little refridgerator, with complimentary water is a lovely touch; as were the wine glasses, and the helpful information pack. The shower-room was well-stocked with towels and toileteries. The book signed by previous guests reinforced the favourable first impression.
Layton, helpfully, made recommendations for an evening meal that did not disappoint. And we saw their ducks (Indian Runners) and hens which bode well for a fresh breakfast egg.
We had a very good nights sleep in a very comfortable bed, after a relaxing spot of viewing on the satellite TV. in our downstairs lounge with french doors.
Breakfast was wonderful! A tasteful room overlooking the beautiful garden, and a lovely ambience. Despite the fact that we were the only guests (they are usually full, and I do not doubt their word), they had provided a magnificent breakfast with a fresh fruit salad, yogurt, a wide choice of cereals and breads, welsh cakes, jams, marmalades, etc. The cooked breakfast did not disappoint, with lovely sausage, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes; and a choice of fresh duck or hen eggs!
Margaret and Layton have the ability to be attentive and friendly, while managing not to be intrusive. They have a delightfully friendly little dog; and whilst we are obviously dog-friendly, they still made a point of ensuring that she stayed out of the guest areas (always a good sign).
This is a hidden gem, and we WILL return....I'm really looking forward to trying the walk that Layton described; which starts almost literally on their doorstep, and ends at the delightful Three Cliffs Bay.
Would I recommend .....? MOST DEFINITELY!!!
