“dirty, dusty and view of brick wall”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

location good however when shown to room 5 old paper by roll up bed, v dusty lampshade, drinks tray was dirty and the teaspoons looked like they had never been washed, dirty toilet on the outside, loo brush was so brown it looked sealed to the floor, stains on inside of bedspread, dusty blinds, dirty windows, filty kettle never wiped, the chair was placed infront of the wardrobe doors and this was the only way they would stay closed, view of brick wall, Went back to guy in bar who booked me in and asked him to come and look at unclean room, he agreed with all I said and I moved into no,6, cleaner but still dusty, I used my make up wipes to clean as much as I could. I wrote 'clean me' on the TV screen, TV was old and did not work at all the next morning, poor sleep woken at 11.20 due to people arriving in upstairs room very creaking floorboards, two showers later and after about 3/4 hour I got to sleep. still stains on bedspread, Shower head was off the wall as holder broken so I had to hold the shower head, the light was not working over the washbasin, the light was only partially working over the dressing table, again blinds and window dirty and dusty, bedside light so dim could not read (TV decided not to work so thought I would read!) however food in restaurant good, I ate in the bar area and about 3-4 golfers were in, but no respect, they were swearing badly which I could overhear. the breakfast next morning was ok but no tea as the boiler for the water was broken, I asked for a receipt and the only guy on site doing the breakfast said they would post it to me. I needed this for my Company, however I had an email on return home thanking me for staying at the Gower Golf Club! I emailed back and asked for a receipt but nothing came through. I then wrote to the President of the club and had no reply, I then sent a copy of the letter to the Captain and again no reply. I suggested one of them actually stays in Room 5 to find out what they think! the next day after my stay I was working in Swansea University and my customer asked where I stayed, I informed her and she commented the Gower Golf Club was known for weddings, I told her about the actual 'inside' which was a surprise.
My advice is to not even book yourself in here! I stayed here with laterooms for £60 b and b, exactly the same tarriff with no discount. I came home and have now decided its either Premier Inn, Ibis or better still Alastair Sawdays Best B&B, that way you know exactly what you are getting, value for money in fabulous clean comfy safe surroundings, and NO swearing!

Room Tip: ask for a non brick wall view, also ask for an upstairs room, actually the better option is to stay...

It is a shame these points were not raised at the time of stay in the normal order of firstly manager and subsequently directors. President and Captain have found this distinctly embarassing when it is not part of their sphere of activity. Perhaps that is the plan. It should have been pursued via golf club management.
I accept that following a busy period in August/September some of the details mentioned werent good enough and attention has since been focussed on those areas. If this had been brought to managers/directors attention in the normal manner, the constructive criticism would have been welcomed and acted upon in a more responsive manner. I would mention the premises has been rated as 4* accommodation since its second year of operation so there is no lack of expectation from the business owners. In fact both rooms have benefitted from new carpets and curtains this year. Standards of housekeeping will certainly be monitored more actively. With regard to language in the bar area, we have several areas that we could have offered as an alternative. Its no excuse for the bad language but unless its identified there and then it is a problem to put right later on.
The wall opposite your room is planned for removal as part of the ongoing development at Gower Golf Club; unfortunately finance does not allow that to proceed at the present time.

“Great value-good golf”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2011

We use a booking agent for all our golf breaks, we had played in the area before, but wanted to stay on the Gower to try a few different coursers and reduce our traveling time each day. We always pay upfront for the golf and accommodation, on this occasion I had suggested alternative hotels on the back of some of the reports on this site, but I was assured this was a great venue for our requirements.
So four senior golfers pitched up for four nights and five rounds a little unsure of the quality of a this establishment, we were all very pleasantly surprised, and frankly puzzled by some of the very negative comments of previous visitors. Ok, let’s outline the setup; the clubhouse has several rooms for functions of various sizes, all well used during our stay by golf matches and competition. A generous sized dining room seemed to be allocated to guests staying in the accommodation, the food was excellent, from a slightly small sized menu, again the wine list wasn’t the largest, but it wasn’t sold at “rip off” prices of many hotels. Breakfast was excellent, any request for something not shown, was generally speedily provided, on every occasion service in the restaurants and the bar was quick and efficient, to the point of buying in some Welsh whisky just for our group and very fair prices. On some occasions the bar area could be lively, but this is what you expect in a golf club, it’s not a quiet cocktail bar, there was a pool table and friendly members to chat to.
As for accommodation, these are rooms in a barn conversion on two levels 2/3 yards from the clubhouse; they are furnished on the pattern of Travel Lodge/Holiday Inn style, very adequate for the purpose. Towels were replaced every day, 2 bottles of water were provided each day, toilet paper was not of the usual cheap hotel standard, but the sort most people would use at home. Ok, there were a couple small issues, during our stay, several nights there was heavy overnight rain, and quite frankly the gutters and down pipes could not cope, so one was woken by the noise. Both rooms had flat screen TV’s which we only used to get the weather forecasts. Again the staff was friendly and very accommodating, on our last day, we were offered to store our cases etc. until after we had played in one of our rooms, were fresh towels were provided if we wanted a shower before the long drive home, how many hotels offer that without charge?
We saw the owner every day about the complex; he seemed to be a very “hands on boss” and was very friendly to everyone. This is a great place for a golfing break with a very good Donald Steel designed course, that despite several hours of very heavy rain was very playable by mid-morning. There was also a mix of cliental, from some campers who gave up when the tent started floating away, 5/6 engineers staying and working in the area and large group of lady golfers.
We found the whole package to be excellent value, friendly efficient staff and excellent food, as far as the comments on access, there are other ways into the village that ovoid the narrow lane, perhaps a quick look at a map rather than relying on Sat-Nav’s will overcome that issue. As a final comment I would ask; what do people expect at these prices, The Ritz?

“Rubbish from start to finish”

Awful experience.

Rude receptionist / bar person, insisted we had to pay the full amount of the room before we could even get the key, not just swipe the credit card as is aually the case.

Also were told we could only eat before 7.30pm as they had a golf meeting happening and wanted us out of the way (we arrived at 6.45pm!!!)

Rooms tiny, small does not cover it, too stuffy, no air conditioning & couldn't open the windows unless you wanted visitors from shop staring in.

Food mediocre, not worth the prices, only saving grace was the extra cold guiness on tap.

Woken up at 6.30am by the guy mowing the green right outside the window, what a pleasure!

“Great time @ the Gower Golf Club”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2011

Was a bit unsure as what to expect having read some of the varied reviews on here. The first point I should mention is the problem other people seem to have with 'no formal reception area', as it is a bed and breakfast and not a Hilton I found it perfectly reasonable that the staff behind the bar were able to greet us very friendly and show us to our room. The room was clean and had everything you would expect with a nice new flat screen in the corner of the room. We spent most of our day out around the wonderful beaches which were only 5 minutes drive away. When we got back I managed to play 12 holes and I must say the course was extremely well kept, a credit to the grounds men there. That evening we spent a couple of hours at the clubhouse having a nice meal and a few drinks. The food was lovely and because the bar wasn’t especially busy the bar man was able to bring our drinks to our table which wasn’t expected but we were grateful nonetheless. The next morning we had an amazing breakfast which was great in quality and amount! That day we attended a function at the club for a family birthday and everyone had a great time. Again the food was great as were the staff. We finally got back to our room at around 1am after the disco. The next morning the lovely housekeeping lady allowed us a little extra time to leave the room as we slight soar heads!!

Overall we had a great time. I think if your going expecting a Hilton, you will be disappointed, however if you go expecting a b&b then together with its surroundings and wonderful staff then you will no doubt have a wonderful time.

We are booked again for late summer to enjoy more of the amazing Gower landscape.

“Good Staff....Though Chef Went Missing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 March 2011

Arrived early evening after a testing drive up a single track road which had few passing areas. The reception area is not obvious, but our confusion was spotted by the chap working behind the bar, who was welcoming and took payment up front, and led us to our room.

The room itself was rather tired with well used fixtures and fittings. The Bedding was clean and bed perfectly acceptable. The TV was a small LCD type, but the remote wasn't working. We also found we had no hot water, but this was soon remedied when we informed reception, who had forgotten to turn it on from a nearby sub station.

We woke up early as check out is 10 am, and were looking forward to a full Welsh breakfast to set us up for the day. When we entered the breakfast area, we were informed the Chef hadn't turned up, and only cereals and toast were available. The lady in charge was very nice and apologetic, and offered us £5 compensation.

I'd rate this at an average 3 star establishment at best. The owners should be very grateful that they have staff that care about the customers, though maybe looking at getting a reliable breakfast chef would be a wise move.
