I ended up staying here with a friend of mine when she came to visit me and her cousin, whom she had booked the room with, couldn't make it. Not wanting to let a good pre-paid breakfast go to waste, I decided to take his place and joined her for a night there. Well, the beds were so comfy and the breakfast so good, I decided to stay with her throughout her stay, even though she was supposedly visiting me.
I'm vaguely straight and so was my friend, so I think it was only after she booked that she realised this was specifically a gay B and B. Therefore, it wasn't necessarily one of her requirements of a B and B and I can say that this place is suitable for anybody really, although I'm happy to say it does provide a particularly hospitable environment for people from any sexual orientation.
I'm very fussy where I stay and this B and B certainly ranked highly, ticking many boxes. For the price, it's excellent value for money. The landlords are absolutely lovely and very welcoming, with their charming black Labrador 'Max' who is equally as friendly and as I found out, was lovingly adopted from a shelter.
The whole place has a cosy, yet modern feel and is nice and clean. It's on a main road but I didn't find the traffic a disturbance at all as the windows are double glazed. The rooms are very nicely decorated, simply, clean and still retaining individual charm. Each bedroom is named after a famous Welsh castle and if you start talking to the landlords, they can tell you all about the place, including their love of theatre which is obvious from the various framed and autographed posters in the hallway. There are also little flipbooks in each bedroom containing all the necessary information for your stay, including the wifi access password for the free internet on offer (just bring your own laptop, obviously). Each room has a VERY comfortable bed, ours was a firm sleigh bed which was a dream for my back (if you excuse the pun) and there is also a small-med LCD TV/ DVD combo which is very handy and some tea and coffee making facilities in the cupboard. Also provided are some shampoos, soap, cotton buds and in the interest of promoting 'safe' recreational activities in the bedroom, some prophylactics. Needless to say, you are well provided for.
After awakening from your well-rested slumber, you have the option of a lovely home-cooked breakfast with a vast vegetarian selection. Again, whist the landlords are vegetarian, this isn't forced on you and you can have cooked meats on request without too many judging glares. Being a vegetarian, I was thrilled to be catered for however and there was also a very nice range of fruits, yoghurts and cereals to choose from at the small self-service buffet. The breakfast is offered in the lovely lounge area, which is cosy and fairly spacious at the same time. There are also a range of DVD's on loan which you can sneak up to your room as long as you make a donation to the charity box (a nice touch, I thought). In addition to breakfast, there are snacks and I believe a lunch on offer by special request.
Outside of the lounge, there is a small garden with smoking area and at the front, there is on-street parking. Some rooms come with their own bathroom, whist others share a bathroom (2 of the rooms, I believe). We were one of the sharing rooms and I'm very fussy about bathroom cleanliness but was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to share as the place is kept very tidy. Fresh towels are also provided in your bedroom and these can be replenished daily if you wish. All in all, it's very accommodating.
I would say that this place, as a B and B, rivals many hotels I've stayed in and is a truly professional venture. It's warm and welcoming, reasonably priced, clean and there is a lovely friendly touch to the place which makes it feel like a home away from home. It's also nice to be somewhere which is so openly non-judgemental, for both straight and gay people. All round, very well done. The only problem, if I could struggle to pick one, is that being on Clive Street, this isn't the most scenic area in Cardiff, however, it is very well linked as you can get to the Bay or town with just as much ease, with good transport links nearby and lots of on-street (free) parking. Couldn't ask for more!
