“Outstanding bed and breakfast”

I stayed at the Gelynis Farm north of Cardiff in mid-November and was delighted with my visit. I walked from the Radyr rail station along the Taff Trail, next to the Taff River, although the hostess offered to pick me up at the station. The room had everything I needed and breakfast was excellent. The hostess was very engaging, answering many of my questions about the local area, from history to great places to eat. Best of all, Gelynis Farm is close to the city, but far enough out to be restful and relaxing. I walked several directions on the Taff Trail, but the best was the 30-minute walk through a little village to Kastell Koch. Dinner at the Gwaelod-y-Garth Inn is also highly recommended.

“Nice stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2011

This is the first time I’m I have stayed at Gleynis farm though my husband has stayed here twice before.

Pros – very comfy large bed, great shower. The furnishings were quality, bedroom and ensuite nicely decorated and immaculately clean. I slept very well as it was quiet with no noise from outside or neighbours.

The room size was snug and the breakfast okay – nothing special.

Cons – there was some confusion over the cost – we have an e-mail saying it was £75, the website says doubles are from £70, though we were charged £80. More clarity and consistency means less confusion.

There is an unmanned level crossing with two sets of gates to be opened which would have been a nuisance had it been raining heavily.

I don’t think it’s especially good value for what you get – maybe Cardiff is expensive to stay in.

On balance for us the pros outweigh the cons.

If a good night sleep in a peaceful, comfy room with pleasant surroundings is important then this B&B should suit.

“A warm welcome to Wales”

We spent three nights at Gelynis in May and had a terrific time. The farm itself has great character - built in the 17th century it just oozes history, and tasteful restoration makes it a snug and fascinating place to stay. It's a few miles out of Cardiff but we really enjoyed the stroll to Radyr station to catch the train into town (if we had been staying longer we would have tried the bike trail).
Margaret is an excellent host - we loved our chats over breakfast with her and her grandchildren, and the food was just great. We walked to pubs on both sides of the Taff (meals were OK) and found Gelynis to be the perfect base for our trips to Cardiff, the Valleys, and Caerwent. It really is one of our favourite places.

“Good value for money, excellent room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2011

We stayed here for two nights in July 2011 after researching B&B's near Cardiff on Tripadvisor.
The booking system and how the deposit is taken is bizarre: It required several emails and Links send back to secure sites etc - this could be improved upon and may cost Gelynis potential business- the booking experience should be seamless now, in 2011, I believe.
The room is excellent with lots of little extra's and a very nice bathroom. The location was rural but close to town, and we didn't really notice any issues with traffic noise as is mentioned by other reviewers. The railway crossing was a little intimidating for my wife when she arrived on her own on the first night, in the dark, - but one soon gets used to it.
The hospitality is great- a very friendly owner. And this is the most important aspect of a B&B, whatever other comments I may have.
The breakfast was, if I am honest, only so-so: A sloppy poached egg, an over-cooked fried egg, a really cheap nasty sausage which can be improved on by buying in a slightly better quality and spending a few pence more. The 'House Special' of smoked salmon with scrambled eggs contained the meanest and smallest portion of smoked salmon ever - come on Gelynis Farm - you can do better than that!

However, in all fairness, the overall package is good value for money and we will be back.

“Very good, clean and friendly in a good location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2011

Very impressive bed and breakfast with an excellent 'welsh' breakfast with good choices. The room was very comfortable with good ensuite and 'king' size bed--although due to Cadw--the Welsh equivalent of English Heritage-asking for the canopy above the rooms at 1st floor level to be removed there was a very small problem of dripping water outside due to the heavy downpour on the Friday night. Nevertheless its somewhere we would definitely stay again. The Watt family are very knowlegeable and caring so your stay will be well looked after. Only a small walk to Radyr station and then train to Cardiff via the picuresque Taffs trail. Good value for money and better personalservice than some of the bigger hotels in the City Centre.
